help! I am a terrible gift-giver

Dear The Internet,

Does anyone have any recommendations for really good travelogues? (You know, books that are basically memoirs about traveling across Africa or through a famous city or something.) I would really appreciate any you might know.

Thanks,
Lindsey

A Time of Gifts, by Patrick Leigh Fermor. Author sets out to walk from London to Constantinople in the 1930s. Or, in the funny department, Beauty Tips From Moose Jaw, by Will Ferguson.

do not quote me, but i think Bill Bryson does a lot of those things?

or for less of a travel-memoir and more of a living-and-working-in-france-for-a-few-years, there is 'A Year in the Merde'... it's funny, and vaguely informative. but more to do with office works.
there used to be an entire section dedicated to those types in Borders, so i feel wandering into B&N, or even Book People, would prove helpful?

Hmm, he does, but it's a present for my aunt, and I think she's probably read him. And it being for my aunt is similarly a problem re: A Year In The Merde (which, OH HEY, I still have your copy of that book...um...), since she's Dutch and probably wouldn't find it funny in quite the right way...

But I will definitely ask my bookstore person for advice! I do love soliciting opinions. :)
