yuletide recs
By no means a complete list, but here's eight recs from my reading so far, in order of reading:
The Constraint of Conscience (6007 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Temeraire - Naomi Novik
Relationships: William Laurence/Tharkay
Summary: To be cowardly in this, to refuse to see it through, seemed more unmanly to Laurence than beginning it.
I have a soft spot for Laurence/Tharkay, and this was a good one -- densely layered prose and tension, and a solid Laurence POV.
The Call To Adventure (2001 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Jumper (2008)
Summary: Every hero's journey must begin with the call to adventure. In this case, it's Griffin on the other end of the line.
So Leave me Here and Call me Lucky (3611 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Jumper (2008)
Summary: The average lifespan of a jumper is six and a half years.
Okay, so after I saw Jumper, I immediately wanted good fic about Griffin (who is easily the best character in the whole movie, thanks largely to Jamie Bell), so I was thrilled to see that there were two stories written for Yuletide! I personally loved Griffin in all his craziness, hated David (who was a totally selfish, self-centered, self-righteous, short-sighted idiot), and I surprised myself by kinda liking Millie and mourning the fact that the script called for her to get progressively dumber for the sake of plot progression. Anyway, this first fic (The Call To Adventure) has a fantastic Griffin voice, makes Millie likeable-albeit-a-bit-dim, and kinda mocks the hell out of David, so I approve. The second is all about Griffin, digging into his backstory and his craziness and the situation the movie left him in, and it's really quite well done.
New Possibilities (1306 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Sense and Sensibility - Jane Austen
Summary: The young Miss Dashwood's friendship with her brother-in-law bears unexpected fruits.
I've always been really fond of Margaret, and this fic is a lovely story all for her. Warning: contains Colonel Brandon being quietly awesome.
Texts From Cephalopods (1547 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Octopus Steals My Video Camera and Swims off with It While It's Recording (Youtube)
Summary: It is a well-established fact in marine biology that the octopus is the drunk texter of the cephalopod family.
I've had a feeling, ever since I saw this fandom listed in the nominations, that it would either produce something really awesome and Yuletide-y, or nothing at all. Guess which it was? I laughed until I squeaked, you guys.
Turn a New Page, Tear the Old One Out (8057 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Breakfast Club (1985)
Relationships: John Bender/Brian Johnson
Summary: People in Shermer had made up their minds about who John Bender was years ago. All John needed was the chance to prove them wrong.
Ah, a perennial pairing favorite. ♥ I love the idea of Bender going into the military, and the Vernon comeuppance in this is fab.
eye of the beholder (647 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: The Losers (2010)
Relationships: Carlos "Cougar" Alvarez/Jake Jensen
Just a little snapshot of a fic from Yuletide Madness, but it features Jensen kicking ass and taking names, all while being the utterly endearing loudmouth that we know and love. Basically, it's wonderful.
The Team Player (3568 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Sports Night
Relationships: Kim/Calvin Trager, Casey McCall/Dan Rydell/Dana Whitaker
Summary: In which Kim saves Sports Night, because somebody has to.
In which Kim knows everyone, and uses her powers for the greatest good: saving Sports Night from cancellation. Her piece de resistance is not to be missed, sports fans. I admit, I did a bit of a double-take at the pairings here, but the author sells it perfectly, and I left grinning my face off.
