So...I never got around to actually crossposting about the Amplificathon 2013 podfics I did. *is super belated* I figured I should probably get on that before Amplificathon 2014 rolled around.

I joined up a week before the deadline, and I'd never recorded anything before, so I started with my own stories and a couple of Katie's. When I inevitably fumble my way through the early part of a learning curve, I prefer it be my own stuff (or my clone's) that bears the brunt of it. Anyway:

Okay, so I apparently haven't posted to LJ in so long that I'm completely weirded out by the new posting form. Yikes, it's been since October! Well, I'm back to do a five-questions meme from [livejournal.com profile] ignipes. I'm not sure doing this right now, when I've just had my wisdom teeth out and am currently loopy on some substantial painkillers with half my face swollen like a chipmunk, is really the best idea, but oh well. *jazz hands*

-Comment with "Winter is Coming" your current favorite catch-phrase/quote from a show/movie, because I have no emotional attachment to Game of Thrones (yet), sorry.
-I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
-Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
-Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions. (If you want. Totally optional.)

My questions and answers:

1. What would your ideal doesn't-exist-but-totally should TV show be about? )

2. What is the ONE movie you think everybody should see? ONLY ONE. NO CHEATING. )

3. What's your favorite comfort food? )

4. What superpower do you want to have? )

5. What's the best advice you've ever received? Or the worst, if that's more entertaining? )

Well, that was fun! I need to start posting more. I got a new job, so my life and free time are no longer being swallowed up by work like they were, which is awesome. I have weekends! And free evenings! It's amazing. :)
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (dwsunflowers)
I recently managed to read a couple of therapy-related fics in short succession, and since fic featuring therapy is one of my favorite things, I thought I'd put together a recs post:

1. Eight Sessions (Due South, Fraser/Kowalski)
My very favorite of all my favorite therapy fics: after a bad on the job shooting, Ray and Fraser have to go to mandatory counseling sessions. And if anyone needs therapy more than Benton Fraser, or could possibly be worse at it, I would really like to see that. This is hilarious, heartbreaking, and heartwarming by turns. I'm sure most DS fans have already read this story, but it's always worth another read. ♥

2. Like Sailing and Home Runs (Sports Night, Dan/Casey)
Dan Rydell, and his therapy sessions following the end of the series. I just re-read this, and it's wonderful. It reads just like an episode of the show, and Dan's therapist Abby is brilliant, and the ins and outs of his sessions are complex and beautifully crafted.

3. Cartography By Touch (Stargate: Atlantis, McKay/Sheppard)
So, there's a reason that the Atlantis expedition has a psychologist on board. Sheppard is traumatized on an off-world mission, and slowly works through it. Great Heighmeyer, great dealing with the issues, great world-building stuff on Atlantis. (Watch the warnings, though.) There's also a Rodney-POV sequel/companion piece, History of Maps.

4. Therapy and Grapes (Life/In Treatment crossover, gen)
I was looking for In Treatment fic (of which there is very little) and found this in the process: Dani gets referred to Paul Weston for an assessment after the events of "Powerless", and he works his usual therapy magic. I kind of wanted a million more words of this, but it's quite good as it stands. Even if you've never seen In Treatment, it serves as a nice outsider-POV of Dani.

5. Abnormal Psychology (Bones/SGA crossover, gen)
This fic never fails to make me laugh. The concept? Lance Sweets becomes the new psychologist on Atlantis after Heightmeyer. AHAHAHAHAHA omg it's so good, you guys. Her Sweets-voice is genius, and if there is anyone who would mix worse with Sweets in a therapy session than John Sheppard.... HEE.

and

6. untitled commentfic (Bones/Hawaii Five-0 crossover, gen)
This is sort of a follow-up to the previous rec, although it's really unrelated in anything but spirit. Because the only person worse than John Sheppard at therapy? Is Steve McGarrett. This, of course, does not stop Sweets.
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (holmeswatsonnewspaper)
1. I saw this collection of James McAvoy gifs on tumblr, and a) HIS HANDS, and b) okay, Sports Night fans, be with me now: doesn't he look uncannily like Dan Rydell here? Complete with impassioned, hand-gesturing speeches about integrity and principles and all that. ♥! I kind of want a Sorkin-esque XMFC AU now. Like, Erik and Charles as anchors on a political commentary show, or something. Raven is their badass producer! Hank is their Jeremy! Darwin is the best damn editor around! They all argue about politics and public policy on mutants together! COME ON. IT WOULD BE SO GREAT. :D?

2. Hey, so I wrote fic the other day! That was pretty exciting; I haven't finished anything in about a year and a half. Of course, I'm pretty sure only about half a dozen people are going to read it, because of the six different fandoms and massively nerdy meta-ness of it all, but I guess that's the curse of being multifannish. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, though, and I had a great deal of success using my typewriter to pound out the last remaining bits.

3. I put my name in the hat for one of the league soccer teams around here recently, and was just emailed by one of the captains! So I've dragged out my old cleats and soccer ball and sports bag, and will hopefully someday soon get to embarrass myself on the soccer field with my lack of cardiovascular fitness and hopelessly rusty ball-handling skills. It's only been six years since I last played....

4. I would really rather focus on the above than think about the many and various ways that my body is currently screwing me over, because apparently now I might get to add "autoimmune disease" on top of the already-teetering pile. Yet more appointments and labwork lie in my future, hurrah.
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (ncislakensi40secs)
First: did you guys know that Sports Night is streaming on Netflix? Time to go a-pimping, my fellow SN fans! And second -- man, how much fun was that ridiculous NCIS:LA episode this week? It had many of my favorite things -- Deeks showing cracks in that obnoxious/cheerful act he tries to pull off, lots of fun Kensi/Deeks interaction, undercover shenanigans, character backstory, and explosions. I was pretty well pleased. :D

I'm sitting around insomniac-ly being bored tonight, again. *sigh* Do you ever get into that mood where you want to re-read something, but what you really want is to be reading it again for the first time? Like you want to re-experience exactly how awesome it felt when you first read that story, not actually re-read it. I'm in that kind of mood right now.

So, recs! The top five seven things I wish I were re-reading (for the first time):

1. Look Here, Look Back, Look Ahead (Marvel Comics, Iron Man Noir) by [livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka
So, I was looking back through my journal to find where I originally recced this so I could link to that post, and discovered to my horror that I'd never actually posted my rec for it. *facepalm* Which is just wrong, because this story is AWESOME. I am maybe a little biased because I helped beta it, but not really -- it's just really fucking awesome. See, Iron Man Noir is basically a canon AU where Tony Stark becomes Iron Man during WWII instead of modern day. And, well, you know, Steve Rogers was kind of around then, too...and Marina picks up that idea and runs with it. It's amazing, and even if you haven't read the comics, WHO CARES, because it's Captain America and Iron Man fighting the Nazis (FTW!), you really don't need to know much more. Marina is fantastic with plot and characterization, as always, and she just kicks ass with all the period stuff and the action shenanigans and EVERYTHING. I really love this fic. I might actually go re-read it now, in fact....

2. What You See Is What You Get (If You're Looking Hard Enough) (The Mentalist)
This came out of the most recent Yuletide, and it's excellent. It's a steampunk/fantasy AU of The Mentalist -- which is an extremely bizarre concept that seems like it would never work, right? But instead, it's pretty much exactly the same as the show, only slightly more magical -- which is a neat trick; the execution is just stellar. The Lisbon POV is absolute perfection and forms the steel-solid core of the fic, the rest of the team is spot-on, the plot is long and interesting, and this story is just so clever. I can't even tell you what a fun ride it is.

3. Aral Vorkosigan's Dog (Vorkosigan series) by [livejournal.com profile] philomytha
Amazing, amazing story. I've never really read much Vorkosigan fic because it's so hard to find people who can mimic Bujold's style, and without that it just doesn't feel right to me. I also have no real desire to read fic about Miles -- his story is told perfectly to my satisfaction in the novels, so why would I want fic? Philomytha is the perfect answer -- she writes so eerily like Bujold that I sometimes am a little suspicious that she's actually LMB herself, and she writes entirely about the secondary characters and canon ships -- with special love and attention to Simon and Alys, who are clearly her favorites. This particular story is Epic and deserving of that capital -- it's Simon's story, a gen epic starting when he meets Aral after the events on Sergyar in Shards of Honor, and following him through the Escobaran War and some small way into the events of Barrayar (so mind the warnings, seriously). And oh my god, it's SO GOOD. Simon's characterization is superb, his developing relationship with Aral gripping, and the action sequences utterly thrilling. It's like the Simon-POV novel that Bujold never got around to writing, and it makes me really happy. *hearteyes* (The rest of Philomytha's fic is excellent as well, if you're looking for Vorkosigan stuff -- I particularly love Secrets and Lies, probably the best Byerly story out there, Vorkosigan's Day, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, Dancing Lessons, and Five Conversations in Alys' Office)

4. Switch (Star Trek reboot)
I am normally not a Kirk/McCoy girl, for whatever reason -- but if they were all like this fic, I totally would be. Long, intense, slow-burn, Bones-POV set largely during their time at the Academy, but stretching through the movie and beyond. Friendship! Pining! Hurt/comfort! It's like everything I want in a fic. It's enormous, too -- 230k+ words, which makes for a really delicious read.

5. Drastically Redefining Protocol (Merlin) by rageprufrock
I may be thinking about this one because of the Royal Wedding, SO SUE ME. :D I'm pretty sure everyone in the world has read this, because, come on. Pru's always good, and this story is certainly no exception.

6. The Student Prince (Merlin)
So, I was going to leave it at 5, but DRP always makes me think of the other epic Merlin modern!AU that I adore. I may even love TSP a little bit more, actually, because I prefer slow-burn romance over love-at-first-sight every time, and their friendship in this is so lovely. The atmosphere of the school setting is wonderful and heart-soothing in the way that only stories about school can be (god knows actual school was never like that). This one's another monster -- 145k words, FTW.

7. Next of Kin (The Losers)
I feel obligated to rec at least one non-novel-length fic here. So here's this one: an AU where Jensen never joins the Losers, and Max kidnaps his sister and niece to force Jensen to work for him. I LOVE this trope so so so much, and it's done terribly well here. ♥

Meme yoinked from this lovely Middleman fic:

The iPod Challenge: Put your MP3 player on shuffle and write a flashfic (I refuse to call these drabbles; I am a term purist!) about each of the first ten songs to come up. The catch? You only have the duration of the song to write it in.

I haven't really looked at these since I wrote them at 5am, so hopefully they're not terrible. I also cheated on the rules for a few of them (you will likely be able to tell which, because they are significantly longer).

Also, I have no idea where the serial killer one came from. I kept trying to figure out who the character was, but I don't think she's anybody I've met before. Whoops, accidental original!fic?

So I was in class today, and we had two major projection fuck-ups, conveniently timed at the two most climactic emotional moments of the film (I Know Where I'm Going).

And then I realized why this was happening today:

Casey: Jeremy, November 23rd. Does that date ring a bell? And don't go to the computer.

Jeremy: Don't have to.

Casey: What is it?

Jeremy: It was on this day in 534 B.C. that Thespis stepped out onto the stage of the Theater Dionysis during a choral song and dance and became the first man to speak words as an actor in a play.

Casey: Tell me I was supposed to know that.

:D

transcript for the episode
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (Default)
I was totally going to bed early tonight. I ate dinner, I did reading for school, I drank some wine (free from my job today!), I took a hot bath, I called my sisters.

And then I was whammied by an amazingly awful headache that just stopped, hours later.

Conveniently, I was also suffering from one of those meandering moods that are the internet equivalent of walking into a room, knowing you went there for a reason, and utterly forgetting what it was. So you walk around for a bit with the nagging knowledge that you want to do something, but you haven't the faintest clue what that might be. Only it's regarding stories/shows instead of needing to find your favorite bookmark.

Anyway, I eventually scratched the itch, and I thought I'd rec the stories that distracted me from the awful pain in my head and kept me from wandering around the internet looking for my keys even longer than I did:

One Minute, Counting (Pushing Daisies; gen)
Yuletide fic! I have a deep and serious love for Emerson Cod. Warnings for character death. Only, not really. Well, technically... oh, hell, just go read the damn thing. It's not at all spoilery. "Oh hell no," Emerson said, which wasn't part of the speech he'd prepared in case this ever happened, but he'd allowed himself a certain latitude. :)

Prism (Fallen Feather Extended Jam) and Beside Still Waters (SPN/FF; both gen)
Oooh, very cool. Supernatural/Firefly crossover; Castiel is sent to contact Mal Reynolds. Who is, if possible, even more difficult a sell than Dean was. :) My favorite part of this are all the times that Cas keeps visiting Dean in Heaven to get advice. And River is awesome (but I feel that should go without saying). I'm having trouble describing the tone, but it's lovely.

Brothers (SPN; gen)
Already been jossed by events of the show, and perhaps not the best thing I've ever read (although I do like the way nwhepcat writes Castiel), but I harbor a great fondness of stories that explore Dean and Castiel's growing friendship, and not in the schmoopy romanticized way you often see. I like them as a 'ship, but honestly? The gen side of things is really great. Dean's never had a friend before (Sam and Bobby and even Ellen are family, which is a whole 'nother kettle of equally tasty but decidedly different fish), and Castiel is pretty equally matched in terms of not knowing how this "friends" thing works (or how this "human" thing works :D). I do so like watching them figure it out. <3

A Very Short Sermon (Sense & Sensibility)
And now for something completely different! This is a lovely bit of writing -- captures that Austen feel, the dynamic between Elinor and Marianne, the feeling of family, and the love in both marriages. Just, very nice.

The Wind Cries PECOTA (SN; gen/het-ish)
Jeremy is totally awesome in this. How have I never read it before? (Maybe because it has a brief mention of Casey/OFC, i.e. he's not living in happily domestic partnership ever after with Dan, which, I get, but it's a stupid reason to miss out on this fic.) It has that great quality Sorkin hits, where his characters are clever and bantery and entertaining, but still manage to have philosophical discussions that make you think and feel on an entirely unironic level. I know many a sports-stats nerd, and this was a lovely way to address that aspect of sports fans in the SN world. Also, coercion about blogging. You know you wanna read that. :)

I also re-read A Meeting of the Neuroses (SN, Dan/Casey), which is still fan-fucking-tastic. You know what's weird? Re-reading comments you forgot you left. Mine mentioned that there really isn't a lot (or really any) fic where Casey finds out about Dan's panic attacks/social anxiety. Why is that?

In a total departure from any of the previous topics, I just realized that John Noble's Walter Bishop in many ways reminds me of Sean Connery's Professor Henry Jones (aka Indiana Jones's dad). Discuss! :)
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (happynakedmen)
I normally am not a huge fan of spoilers, but I am so glad I clicked on this link, because OMFG THIS CASTING SPOILER MAKES ME SO HAPPY I COULD EXPLODE :D

and the discussion thereof )

Also unrelated-- NEWSFLASH! Misha Collins totally and completely insane. Bless 'im. :) I cannot wait to see [above casting spoiler] meet Castiel...
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (redballoongirl)
I know a lot of people are weighing in on the fic warnings issue, and I'm really not planning to get involved. I'm on the side of warnings; as a writer, I appreciate the desire to not give away the ending (or the middle), but in this community... I know this is going to come out wrong, but a lot of people in fandom are here because we have problems elsewhere. I think that putting effort into respecting that is a given.

To quote a very wise fictional character: "So you say a few words, you make a gesture, remember an important date. Small price to pay for what you get in return. For what you get in return, it's a steal. The rest is all vanity." (That's Isaac Jaffe on Sports Night, for you heathens who've missed out.)

It does make me curious about something, though. For those of you on my flist this is relevant to, don't answer if it bothers you, but how do you deal with media in the rest of the world? I mean, TV shows and books and even newspaper articles don't warn for triggers, so what do you do? Are you sometimes blindsided? Are you extra-careful when approaching media? Do you avoid things that might be more trigger-risky? It's not really related to the debate, but I've been wondering.
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (snfriendsgearup)
So I finally checked my mail about a week ago for the first time since getting back, which means I came back to cards from lovely LJ people! *draws hearts*

I wanted to share this one with you guys, because [livejournal.com profile] lordessrenegade gave me a card MADE OF AWESOME by her own two hands, and I LOVE IT LOTS and it deserves to be shown off. *flails*

for it is Dan! Under my Christmas tree! Which is true love, since, you know. Jewish. )

There was also a very sweet note inside, but that's for me to know and you to NEVER FIND OUT, MUAHAHAHA! But it made me want to teleport to where Jai lives and give her a hug. *hugs* :D \o/

In totally other news, I had a good day today. I went to the first meeting for this student film production in which I will be 2nd Assistant Cameraperson (and sometime Actual Cameraperson with my 1st A.C. since the cinematographer will not always be able to make the shoots, which is VERY EXCITING), and I've been told I can sit in on training sessions for the other departments and such, so I'm looking forward to learning a lot. Also! M., the 1stAC (and last semester classmate of mine) is going to try to hook me up with an internship where he works. Which is sort of vaguely related to the post, I guess, since they have a Aaron Sorkin film in the works... And I ate massive amounts of Mexican food and my suitemates are about to host a party here, which I'm excited about. :D
inmyriadbits: (weirdsncaseyhead)
I'm thinking about Sports Night (I kind of blame this fic, The Light, which is really gorgeously done and highly recommended), and wondering. I'm thinking about cancelled shows, in particular, and TV in general, and other kinds of storytelling tangentially, and wondering about loose ends. I mean, movies generally try to tie things up unless they know for sure a sequel's in the works, but even they leave questions without answers. I hate questions without answers, which is probably why I love fanfic. TV is designed to leave you with questions at the end of each little sub-unit of the greater whole, but when you're left facing the end, sometimes there's just no way to answer all of those questions. Especially if the questions you think you need to answer are different from the questions your audience has.

Anyway, the point of that rambling sentence is, I'm wondering what you all wonder about Sports Night. What were you really looking forward to finding out as the episodes continued that you didn't get to find out? I'm not exactly asking for what fanfic you'd like to see; more like what unresolved storylines you're hankering to know about.

My list is such:
such )

There's more, but that will suffice.

What did y'all want to see play out?
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (snnataliegoodporn)
I fail as a fangirl.

I have not yet told everyone interested in Sports Night to go check out [livejournal.com profile] sportsnightglee, the Sports Night Glee Week community.

It's going to be lots of fun! Right now the comm is kicking off with an introductory post, a social thread/friending meme, a Request-A-Thon and a couple other things. Over the next week there will be fic challenges, recs, and a viewing party/chat (I am SO excited), and other fannish delights.

For a small fandom like ours, this is a great chance to play with other fans of the show. Nothing is quite as much fun as gleeful herds of fangirls.

Come! Join! Be merry! :D
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (snrenaissancesoccerball)
I'm procrastinating, which means I've done some preliminary work on my post-MJ Sports Night panel project. Basically, this involves trying to find links to every SN fic ever. Yeah, I know, why did I volunteer for this?

The good news is, The Wayback Machine seems to have at least some of the old Trickster archive pages, which is great! They don't have all 306 actual fic pages archived, although some are (I haven't checked through all the links yet, of course). The important thing is that all the Quicksearch by Author and Quicksearch by Title pages have been archived. While this may not seem like much, it is, in fact, vastly cool. It has author names. More importantly, it has author emails. The most recent archiving is from April 3, 2005, which means there's still a snowball's chance in hell that I can cold-call (er, email) authors and actually reach them. Of course, for a lot of them I don't need to do that; people like shrift and Nestra are still around and have their own sites. However, for those mysterious disappeared authors and fics, I have a) helpful people on LJ with good memories *crosses fingers*, b) Google, c) and finally, email addresses (MUAHAHAHA!). If anyone more knowledgeable wants to help me out by playing connect-the-dots between the Trickster author names and LJ handles/personal sites, I would be most grateful. I'll make more formal requests for things later, once I have a better idea what/who I'm looking for.

Aside from the Trickster archive, I have a bunch of links bookmarked. Many of these are secretly hundreds of links, sneakily disguised as a single entry in my Bookmarks folder (such as the LJ newbie guide or [livejournal.com profile] scrunchy's Dan/Casey write-up at [livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto or the [livejournal.com profile] snarchive journal). Each of those lends me helpful additional links in the entries themselves and in the comments, those posters'/commenters' journals as hunting grounds for possible fic/links/recs, and then more of the same for every fic/link/rec I find. It's sorta like...what's the word...a "web," isn't it? ;) God bless the Internet and all those links.

I forsee long, complicated spreadsheets in my future. Because I am weird and love making lists, this pleases me. *beams*

BTW, if anyone wants to take a trip on the nostalgia train and check out the old Trickster archive, here's a list of all the versions/dates archived. Have fun! *waves you out the door with a white hankie*

*sigh* Back to studying for Bio. I am so going to fail, guys.

ETA: Oh, thank god. There are only 155 fics over at The Pit of Voles. For one frightening moment I thought I was going to have to wade through massive amounts of truly awful fic in my obsessive need to be thorough. Whew.

omgwtffic!

I wrote fic! Sports Night fic! This is so weird; I've never done this before, despite having been around for over six years. Let me know what you think?
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (Default)
You know, looking back at my post on April 26th, I do believe I made a few erroneous selections on that last posting. Then again, I didn't know who Gary Dourdan was at the time, since CSI has been a recent thing for me. I can't believe that neither George Eads or Eric Szmanda aren't on that list, though. Total gyp. I know I would rather do Nick than Warrick (it's all about the attitude; Warrick is just a bit too angst-angst-angst; Nick and Greg have his intensity and levity). As for the actors...well, I wouldn't say no. Also, I believe I can forgive myself for not remembering that Josh Charles and Peter Krause are the names of lovely actors who play the equally lovely Casey McCall and Dan Rydell on Sports Night. Silly Lindsey.
