We had a sudden cold front sweep through, so I decided to celebrate with a hot toddy. Katie and I consulted, and in honor of going to see Iron Man 3 tonight, decided that chai (for Bruce Banner's India connection) with whiskey (Tony, duh) would be the best combination.

I'm calling it the Science Bros Toddy.

It's delicious. :)

Okay, so I apparently haven't posted to LJ in so long that I'm completely weirded out by the new posting form. Yikes, it's been since October! Well, I'm back to do a five-questions meme from [livejournal.com profile] ignipes. I'm not sure doing this right now, when I've just had my wisdom teeth out and am currently loopy on some substantial painkillers with half my face swollen like a chipmunk, is really the best idea, but oh well. *jazz hands*

-Comment with "Winter is Coming" your current favorite catch-phrase/quote from a show/movie, because I have no emotional attachment to Game of Thrones (yet), sorry.
-I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
-Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
-Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions. (If you want. Totally optional.)

My questions and answers:

1. What would your ideal doesn't-exist-but-totally should TV show be about? )

2. What is the ONE movie you think everybody should see? ONLY ONE. NO CHEATING. )

3. What's your favorite comfort food? )

4. What superpower do you want to have? )

5. What's the best advice you've ever received? Or the worst, if that's more entertaining? )

Well, that was fun! I need to start posting more. I got a new job, so my life and free time are no longer being swallowed up by work like they were, which is awesome. I have weekends! And free evenings! It's amazing. :)

I like TurboTax. It makes it easy enough to file your taxes that you can do it while, say, three margaritas to the wind after celebrating a recent promotion.

Not that that is a personally-relevant example or anything... >.>

(p.s. Katie just finished the second book in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy, and she actually threw it away from her, grabbed up the third book, ripped off its dust cover, and frantically flipped to the first page. Yeah, it's that kind of cliffhanger. :D)

God, sometimes I really miss being able to get Chinese food and/or walk to the grocery store at 3:30 in the morning.

My dad does this thing where he still buys groceries and cooks as if he's feeding three growing teenage girls who do soccer three or four times a week, plus himself, plus my mom back when she was in her forties and also doing soccer three or four times a week (my mom's awesome, what can I say), no matter how often we remind him that this is not the case. It's terribly annoying.

Anyway, the point of this post really isn't to bitch about my dad, who is a lovely man despite his grocery shopping habits. But he does buy just massive amounts of white grapes, for example. Luckily, that of all fruits is probably best; once they start going squishy, you can just throw them in the freezer, and they make a really awesome snack for when it's 112 degrees outside and you're also running a slight fever.

Mmm, frozen grapes.

I just experienced an extremely bizarre sense of longing for my college dining hall food. That's just...wrong on so many levels.

But their waffles were really good.

HI THERE, INTERNET.

Haven't posted in a while, have I? Probably because work is crazy due to it being the season for all the holiday parties, and also having a social life, and about a half-dozen doctor appointments. *sigh*

BIG NEWS: Katie and I caught up on Hawaii Five-0! PLEASE COME DISCUSS IN THE COMMENTS! I want to talk for ages about how pretty the scenery is, or how pretty the wildlife (i.e., EVERYONE on the team), or about how rapidly this show has become my happy place, only to make me wait for new episodes. But I really have to sleep at some point tonight, so I won't. I am making myself pick three things to talk about instead:

mild spoilers, I guess )

3a. The problem with working in a hotel with continental breakfasts is that I spend a great deal of time in the morning with pineapple right in front of me, reminding me of H50, while also being a giant nerd. These things lead to thought processes like: Ever since I found out that pineapple has an enzyme that literally breaks down flesh, I have had a bit of weirdness eating it. Hmm, I bet Danny would also have a problem with that. He already hates pineapple; maybe that's why. They're flesh-eating! Flesh-eating...ooh, maybe someone should write H50 zombie fic. It's set on an island, that's inherently interesting. Plus, you just know Steve would be awesome at killing zombies. They probably have a section of SEAL training all about beheading the living dead. Or he just decided he wanted to be prepared. OH WAIT -- pineapples, zombies, both flesh-eating...THE PINEAPPLES ARE CAUSING THE ZOMBIES. AHAHAHAHAHA....

...and then, I have not a single person at work to share these thoughts with. It's very sad.

Anyway, stopping there! Because I have to be awake at 5am, and then work for about 18 hours, and then do the same thing on Friday, only waking up at 4am instead. But please talk to me in comments. :D?

Hello all! I am back from my lovely vacation (well, it was my mom's vacation; I'm not working regularly enough to really feel justified in calling it my vacation).

Things Done: )

Everyone has weird little habits, don't they? For example, when I make canned chicken noodle soup, I pick out the pieces of chicken and throw them away. What's something weird you do? Food-related or otherwise. :)

Also, [livejournal.com profile] thespatz just posted links to her favorite SPN prank-war fics, which immediately made me crave more prank-fic (Leverage! Sports Night! Psych! It would be awesome!), but I could only think of one other story (For Every Action, Man From UNCLE, delightful).

So, dear flist, do you have any favorite fics of this particular subgenre? Any fandom will do. Or you could write me commentfic to sustain me through the awful paper I have to write *makes big puppyeyes*

*sigh* Don't you hate when your suitemates, with the best of intentions, move your large pot of slow-cooking beans to a smaller burner without telling you, thus totally throwing off the cooking process? Yeah, me too.

For some reason, I'm really in the mood for "Oh No, My Loved One Is Dead! But Wait, Not Really!" cliche fic. You know, with the grief and the angst, and the tragic separation, and the realizations of how much X meant to Y now that X is gone -- and then the realizations that Loved One is not dead! And Y can save them! And have a dramatic reunion! etc. You know what I mean. It's subtly different but close cousin to the rescuing-the-Loved-One-from-mortal-peril trope (see Bones' Gravedigger episodes, for example), but with added angst before the determination kicks in. Good times.

Suffice it to say, I've been reading a good deal of Man From UNCLE fic. :D

Unfortunately, it's mostly re-reading, because I've made my way rather thoroughly through the recs in that fandom. More's the pity. But I'm easy! Rec me your favorites of this cliche, please? Any fandom works, pretty much. Even if you think I don't know it, I actually probably do. I'm just that good. :)

I feel like there is untapped potential for this cliche. It obviously has great amounts of play with close partnerships, as well as in, say, spy genre fandoms, or where someone might have an enemy holding a violent grudge and the capacity for kidnapping, or whatever. But imagine it bent a little for less obvious fandoms: Criminal Minds (team rather than partners, but still emotionally affecting), or Sports Night (they don't really live lives of danger, so death is more unexpected), or Merlin (if everyone thinks Arthur has died, that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish on top of the personal issues). Tell me your ideas! :)

I wish I could make a screencap right now. When you order Domino's online, they tell you who started your pizza when.

Mine currently says: "Elvis began custom-making your order at 10:04 PM"

:D

I love salt. It's true. I put a ton on my food, and I even eat it straight -- pour a little into my hand and lick it off, lick all the salt off the rim of a margarita, dump those little fast food packets straight into my mouth, that kind of thing.

There are all kinds of salt -- table salt, sea salt, rock salt, margarita salt (mmm) -- but nut salt is on my mind at the moment. You know what I mean; it's that fine, dusty kind of salt that sticks perfectly to the oily nuts (that sounds so wrong...) and gets all over your fingers when you eat them, leading to the highly enjoyable experience of licking them clean. I somehow doubt it's something you can buy in a store, but I would if I could.

So anyway, I'm eating cashews and marveling at the salt.

Mostly because it keeps me from throwing things at my own head for not checking the gain on the camera yesterday during the shoot, thereby avoiding the last four hours of wrestling with Soundtrack Pro instead of editing video.
