So, apparently there's something about me + being sick + Christmastime that leads to me watching HBO war miniseries. I don't know why this is, but considering the way I watched Generation Kill two years ago when I was sick on Christmas, and the way I just watched all of The Pacific since Sunday, I seem to be creating a pattern.

(I was reading through old posts while typing this up, and now I'm trying not to think too much about the fact that it's been a) 2 years since I graduated, and b) 2 years since I've gotten laid. Both are depressing for different reasons.)

People I was surprised to see on The Pacific:
- Joe Mazzello (probably best known as Tim from Jurassic Park; he grew up cute, and he's fantastic as Eugene Sledge, so I kinda have a crush)
- Ashton Holmes (aka Thom from Nikita, aka apparently some guy on Revenge) as Sid Phillips
- Anna Torv (aka Olivia Dunham from Fringe) playing a movie star selling war bonds
- Caroline Dhavernas (aka Jaye Tyler from Wonderfalls) as Leckie's girl-across-the-street Vera
- Clare van der Boom (aka Rachel, Danny's ex-wife on Hawaii Five-0) as that Greek girl Stella that Leckie hooks up with in Melbourne

People I was not surprised to see:
- William Sadler. That man turns up everywhere, and I love it. :)

Anyway. Unfortunately, fic for The Pacific seems to be much harder to find than fic for GK was. So. Recs? Anyone? I'm rather fond of Sledge, because he's great. Weirdly, my other favorite character from the miniseries was Lena, the sergeant that John Basilone marries in "Iwo Jima." I just thought she was awesome.

I've had AUs on the brain (XMFC fandom is rife with them), so apparently the thing to do with that situation is to rec some of my favorite AUs. In alphabetical order by fandom:

1. The Art of Running & Fearless on My Breath (The Fast & The Furious, Brian/Dom)
Because what the world really needed was for someone to take a massively testosterone-infused fandom like this, and change one of the main characters into a woman. That's right, people -- this is Brian genderswap (of the always-been-a-girl variety), and it's really good. Brian is totally crazy in the exact same way, but then also crazy in some other new and fun ways, but it's all excellent. I think what I love best about this is that the author preserves their friendship and mutual respect from the movies; Dom doesn't treat Brian like a girl, he treats Brian like a person. IDK, it's genderswap fic! They drive really fast cars while being attractive! It's great! The sequel (Fearless on My Breath) then takes on the second movie, and it's kind of better this way.

2. Sixteen Days In September (Generation Kill, Brad/Nate)
This is an amazing story. Fair warning: it's a really intense war story, so there's violence of many kinds and very heavy subject matter. That said, don't be scared off! I can't imagine there's someone out there who hasn't read this yet, since it was recced to high heaven, but it's one of those stories that deserves every scrap of praise it gets. This is a point-of-departure AU: instead of joining the Marines, Nate joins the Peace Corps, and is sent to East Timor...and then a civil war starts up, and Nate, of course, does whatever he can to look out for people and do the right thing, but his pragmatic idealism takes a real beating from the war. A lot of the rest of the ensemble show up (as Marines still; actually, RL Nate went to East Timor as part of the peacekeeping force when he was a Marine), and everyone is just perfectly characterized. The Brad/Nate is a delicious slow burn that I love to pieces. Seriously, I cannot recommend this highly enough.

3. Play It Again, Jeeves (Jeeves & Wooster, gen-ish Bertie/Jeeves)
And now for a 180-degree tonal shift! The last was epic and very serious; this is short and completely ridiculous. The author did it on a request for "cracky retelling of Casablanca with Jeeves and Bertie." It's a very brief little piece (set in the last scene of the movie, so DON'T READ IT if you haven't seen the film, if you care about spoilers), but it makes me just die with laughter. Imagine recasting Rick with Bertie and Captain Renault with Jeeves, and then shifting the tone of the whole thing way into the Wodehouse range of things, and there you are. And by "there" I mean "laughing your ass off." Hee.

4. Next of Kin (The Losers, gen-ish)
This author writes the best damn Jensen in The Losers fandom, hands-down. If you like Jensen -- and who doesn't? -- you should read everything else she's ever written, basically. Anyway, this AU is also a point-change: Jensen never joins the Losers...and then Max gets his hands on his niece and sister and blackmails Jensen into working for him as his pet hacker. So Jensen is left to do an impossible task with his family's life on the line, and he has no backup. And then the Losers hear about Max's computer expert and decide a little bad guy kidnapping is in order, not realizing that Jensen's about as not-bad as you can get.... ♥ I've re-read this many many times, and it continues to delight me.

5. Apotheosis (Sherlock, gen-ish John/Sherlock)
AWESOME AU IS AWESOME. This is an inversion of "The Empty House" (the ACD short story wherein Holmes was revived after supposedly dying at Reichenbach Falls) setup -- after the confrontation with Moriarty at the pool, instead of Sherlock going after Moriarty alone for three years, John does. Long, plotty, full of pining, and lots of badass John! Truly excellent, and really creative in certain ways that I refuse to spoil for you.

Anyway, that's it. Enjoy!

- So I just realized that I never posted the results for the unguessed pairings in the quotations ship meme a couple of weeks ago. I've now updated the post with the answers -- no one guessed Miss Parker/Jarod (The Pretender), Josh Lyman/Donna Moss (The West Wing), Olivia Dunham/Peter Bishop (Fringe), Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), or Steve McGarrett/Danny Williams (Hawaii Five-0). For shame on the last one, people. The rest I kind of expected -- serves me right for being ridiculously multifannish. The pairings that were guessed were Brad Colbert/Nate Fick (Generation Kill), Bertie Wooster/Reginald Jeeves (Jeeves & Wooster), John Watson/Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes books), Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane (Lord Peter Wimsey series), and Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski (Due South).

- I have started compulsively watching QI again. Why is Stephen Fry so awesome, seriously? I just want to be his friend, give him a hug, and sit around drinking tea and/or madeira while talking about obscure trivia. (SIGH why am I not Emma Thompson)

- Question: does anyone know where I might *ahem* look for video editing programs, with, say, an eye patch on, if you know what I mean? I've been really wanting to make some vids, but fuck if I'm going to do it with Windows Movie Maker again.

- In other, unrelated news, I can't stop listening to Janelle Monáe's song "Cold War". I'm not sure why. It's awesome. :)

Oh my god, you guys. I am so fucking bored right now. And antsy. Like, really antsy. Like, want to go swing dancing or run around the block or something, that kind of antsy. Only I can't do those things, because it is 11pm. What the hell. So instead, I'm going through some old files and finding all the half-finished memes I have hanging around. (There may be more of these coming. I am BORED, and I slept for 12 hours because work has been deathly slow and I have no responsibilities, because I am a poor excuse for an adult human being. Anyway.)

And as always -- Katie, you know me too well. Let the other kids play first. ;)

ZOMBIES!

Have I mentioned I love zombies? I do. I particularly love zombie alterations to stories I already know and love. I'm reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies right now and having a very good time! I'm thinking about requesting P&P&Z for Yuletide, only with the characters from Sense and Sensibility instead, because I think Marianne Dashwood dealing with zombies would be hilarious. (Also on the Yuletide list: Fringe fic set in the noir!AU episode universe :D)

Along the same lines, this Leverage fanwork website is so much fun. It's meant to be co-read with an [livejournal.com profile] apocalyptothon fic, Survival By Eliot; the website is basically the website Hardison would design for the Leverage gang's zombie-fighting endeavors in the case of a zombie apocalypse, and the fic is a narrative counterpart. Hardison's footnotes are HILARIOUS, and make sure to read the alt text for the links, too. SO GOOD. Creative fanwork, con artists, AND zombies, hooray!

When I start reading things like this, I inevitably start thinking of other fandoms + zombies, usually starting with the most recent.

cut for lengthy speculation on Hikaru no Go, The Mentalist, Generation Kill, Criminal Minds, Life, Castle, Lord Peter, Burn Notice, Sherlock Holmes, Jeeves & Wooster, and The Middleman -- all WITH ZOMBIES! )

Come tell me your own thoughts re: the above or your own favorite "X Fandom – WITH ZOMBIES!" scenarios in the comments. I would most sincerely like to hear them!

In conclusion: ZOMBIES.

Meme yoinked from this lovely Middleman fic:

The iPod Challenge: Put your MP3 player on shuffle and write a flashfic (I refuse to call these drabbles; I am a term purist!) about each of the first ten songs to come up. The catch? You only have the duration of the song to write it in.

I haven't really looked at these since I wrote them at 5am, so hopefully they're not terrible. I also cheated on the rules for a few of them (you will likely be able to tell which, because they are significantly longer).

Also, I have no idea where the serial killer one came from. I kept trying to figure out who the character was, but I don't think she's anybody I've met before. Whoops, accidental original!fic?

Ohhhhhshit. I just had to click on a link to TV Tropes, didn't I? I even just talked about how dangerous that site is with Katie.

*sigh* I can just see the rest of evening spinning away into a cloud of open tabs and fascinated reading.

I have found a few awesome things so far, this time around:

links and discussion under the cut, should you wish to avoid the black hole of awesome that is TV Tropes at this time. NO REALLY, CLICK AT YOUR OWN RISK. )

Okay, stopping now. I have such an unhealthy relationship with that site.
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (avatartophrocks)
Wow, I am just spamming LJ today, aren't I? A few links and some blather:

- I loved this article, which was written by James Ransone (actor who played Ray Person in Generation Kill, and perhaps I should mention again my deep and abiding love for that miniseries). Even if you haven't seen GK, you will probably find something interesting in it for you, as he discusses addiction, bad choices, the difference one good decision can make, life imitating art imitating life, and the effect that friends, roadtrips, and constructively brutal mocking can have on a life.

***

On a totally different tonal note, has everyone seen the gorgeous banners for The Last Airbender? Because they are gorgeous. (I may be making an icon of movie-Zuko's hand in another program as I type this.) Also, there are trailers! New ones! Which I somehow had missed, because I am oblivious, but are making me really excited about the movie. Katie pointed out to me that a lot of the shots use identical composition to certain scenes in the animated series, which is both really smart (because the original show is gorgeously done) and encouragingly faithful.

Don't get me wrong; I still have some reservations about how well the adaptation will work (trying to fit an entire season into one film, especially a season with some rather surprisingly subtle character development for an animated series? Uh...good luck with that? Thank goodness you cast someone with Dev Patel's acting ability as Zuko?), and I'm still pissed as hell that they passed up the opportunity – and, I would argue, the imperative – to cast Asian actors. But I also feel that one of the beauties of storytelling is that a good story can have significance of its own far beyond its creators or creation, and that casting process (and my knowledge about casting process) are only one part of that. I mean, just look at Casablanca, one of my very favorite movies ever, which had a totally bonkers production that included things like, oh, the script not having an ending. But the film, well...the film transcends.

Basically, I'm going to give the thing a chance, and hope really hard that they don't mess it up. Why? Because that story has enormous potential, far beyond any one (incredibly dumb-ass) production decision.

If they do fuck it up, though? There will be words. And if they fuck up Toph's character? EXPLOSIONS.
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (weirdlifepersonalpineapple)
So, I'm essentially on vacation, working infrequently, and also kinda sick at the moment. When such is the case (okay, fine, I really don't even need the excuse), I tend to spend a lot of time with stories, reading and watching media. My current obsessions:

1. Reading Sherlock Holmes with [livejournal.com profile] thespatz.
Katie and I discovered that we both enjoy Doyle about ten times more when read aloud, because otherwise we tend to skim the big blocks of description and miss the delightful subtleties, which are happily brought out in the dramatic reading. We plan to work our way through the entire collected adventures!

2. The Pretender!
Wow, talk about a blast from the past. I think this one started because we were re-watching the Burn Notice episode where Michael and his antagonist are held hostage in a bank and forced to work together. Katie mentioned the Pretender episode where that also happened, which I didn't remember, so we downloaded it for kicks. And then watched the one where Parker and Jarod are handcuffed and trapped in a hurricane. And then the pilot, and it was all downhill/the rest of S1 from there. I'd forgotten how much I loved that show, and happily, the re-watch is revealing new dimensions that I didn't really understand when I was nine. Katie stole all the things I wanted to say that were actually thoughtful, so we'll leave it at that. :)

3. Vorkosigan. Miles Vorkosigan
I'm re-reading Komarr. Um, again. This is at least the sixth time, at a conservative estimate. And then I plan to re-read A Civil Campaign, which is for more like the tenth time. :D? It's been just long enough since I last did it that I'm really enjoying the experience. *happy sigh* Gosh, I love this series.

4. Nate Fick
Okay, fiction/non-fiction collision. Along with the Generation Kill DVDs Katie and I bought, we got Evan Wright's book that inspired it, and the book that the real-life Nathaniel Fick wrote about his career as a Marine officer, One Bullet Away. I keep having to stop reading because I'm getting waaaay too emotionally over-invested. I can't help it! He talks about things like honor and duty and means it, and man, that gets to me enough when it's fictional characters. Anyway, it's serious personality-crush/fascination territory, so I'm keep avoiding/not-avoiding the book because I don't have the energy.
(side note: when buying this book from Amazon, Katie was browsing the reviews and, after reading a particularly complimentary one, went to see who wrote it – and realized it was written by Rudy Reyes, one of the Marines in Fick's unit in Iraq. It's worth a read.)

In other news, I have been coughing and wheezing at night so badly that it's kept me from sleeping, so I went to the doctor today. To my surprise, they gave me an inhaler (short-term), and hydrocodone cough syrup. I...am not sure this isn't overkill, but whatever. I'm just glad to know I won't be up until dawn tonight.

Also, I totally called that spoilers for NCIS:LA )

So, I wrote up this whole post about my week/the last few days, and then realized I didn't want to be that "Hi! How are you? Good? LET ME RAIN ON YOUR PARADE" person while everyone's having a happy holiday, so I private-locked it.

Anyway. Hi! How are you? Good? Great! Hey, you wanna talk about fandom? I'm having trouble accessing Yuletide, but that's okay. Let's see, what have I been up to recently? Well, I watched all of Generation Kill while packing, and it was fabulous. And then a couple of weeks ago, I saw all of Lie To Me! That was fun. I may go see Brendan Hines play on the 30th. I hooked my sister on Fringe while she was visiting. *insert evil laugh here* Hmm, what else...oh, I just watched two Bond movies -- On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Diamonds Are Forever. Man, Diana Rigg is gorgeous. George Lazenby too, for that matter, but the man can't really deliver his lines; DR was acting circles around him (but still managing to do him favors). Tiffany Case (in DAF) really made a terrible Bond girl in comparison. Also that movie was in 1971; Doctor No was in 1962, which means Sean Connery went gray in less than a decade. He aged fast -- well, but fast.

Yeah. I dunno. I've been taking Nyquil...
