happy sigh
Dec. 23rd, 2009 09:44 amHi guys!
I spent yesterday being extremely nice to myself (and spending money that I really shouldn't, but fuck my budget). This included:
- getting my hair cut and color re-done (for the first time since September; there was some epic BAD happening on my head)
- having lunch at one of those swanky NYC bistros where even the mac & cheese is gourmet and the most delicious thing EVER and you can also drink sparkling pink wine but still chat with a friendly waiter about traveling because it's late lunchtime and you're one of only three people in there
- getting a 90-minute deep-tissue massage, which involved a tiny Chinese beating the crap out of me until I turned into a happy puddle
- going home, drinking hot chocolate, and hanging out with my suitemates while finishing off the last of the scotch
I was totally that weirdo walking down the street with a big stupid grin on her face, getting freaked-out looks from all the Real New Yorkers who know that's Just Not Done.
*grins*
Today will be spend packing! And probably going to see Avatar with my friend. We shall see.

DONE!
DONE WITH COLLEGE FOREVER!
DONE AND DRUNK! (*waves at
serialkarma*)
I'm totally going to spend the next week or so reading ridiculous fanfic and watching Generation Kill and sleeping.
Also, getting a haircut.
It's going to be awesome.

wanderin' star
Nov. 30th, 2009 11:45 pmOof. Flight was delayed due to weather in Newark, and then I was the dumbest person ever and got off the Amtrak while still in NJ, so I ended up taking the PATH into the WTC and having to walk/ride the subway/lug my bags much longer/farther than I would've liked.
I also had to leave my twin, my family, my Texas Crew friends, and the miracles of Tex-Mex and legit margaritas behind, but I'm trying not to think about that.
On the bright side, I got down a few pages of thesis notes, so that's good. And I have pralines. YUM.
( have some pictures! NYC-as-Atlantis and pugs in suitcases )

I've been thinking about it, and I have to say, casting Elsa Lanchester (who played the Bride of Frankenstein) as a mad scientist in Man From U.N.C.L.E. (1.23 "The Brain-Killer Affair") was kind of an awesome move, and maybe the best stunt-casting I've seen -- although if you have other contenders, feel free to pitch them. :) They even made a nod to it with her hairstyle, with those distinct wavy white streaks on the side. I am picturing them giggling to themselves at their own cleverness (hey, it's what I would do).
Well played, show. Well played. :)
***
Unrelatedly, you know what I love? 'A Kiss To Build A Dream On' by Louis Armstrong. I haven't listened to it in a while (and in fact seem to have lost it from my hard drive -- Katie, can you email me a copy?), but it was like meeting a good old friend.
***
On another unrelated topic, I've been thinking a lot about what New York must have been like in the 1960s. This is what happens when you alternate watching Mad Men and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. episodes. I mean, aside from contemplating/writing Mad Men/MFU crossovers, but I already did that. :)
***
And in a final shallow note...don't get me wrong, I love Natalie Morales and I'm enjoying White Collar, but...does anyone else think that her new hairstyle was a terrible, terrible mistake? I mean, really.

It's really hard to determine whether you have a temperature when you're a college student without a thermometer. Just so you all know.
Sometimes when I'm bone-tired or sick, instead of collapsing I go into uber-cleaning/organizing mode. Like today: I made an omelet, went to health services (pap smear, fuuuun, plus way to go not having my blood work results like they said they would), went to the bank and the grocery store, washed and dried four loads of dishes (including my suitemates' stuff), wiped down the table and stove, vacuumed the kitchen and hall, cleaned my room, cleared off my desk, budgeted money, hung pictures, and cleared out my email inbox (okay, one of them). I've also had about six cups of tea already (Prince of Wales black with apricot jam as a sweetener, lapsang souchong and oolong with milk and sugar).
Don't lie -- you all kind of want me as a roommate right now, don't you. :)
I'm pretty sure it all started because I bought white freesia and gorgeous red-orange gerbera daisies (the color of my red curtains, if you've seen them). I put them in a purple vase and set it on the kitchen table, but everything else was just so dirty, and the next thing I knew, I'd gone into cleaning frenzy. But everything looks lovely now, and the freesia smells great, but OMG am I tired. Why do I have to write response papers on the stupidest damn prompts in the world? (Answer: because I was sick and skipped my 9am discussion section last week. Curses.)
Ugh. I'm really starting to feel like crap. Definitely overdid it today...

leaving on a jet plane
Aug. 14th, 2009 01:35 amCompletely exhausted, but I'm flying back to Austin tomorrow, so exciting! My friends up here are as diligent as my friends down there about putting me on a plane drunk/hungover, and I'm not as crazy with the last-minute packing as I usually am. So, good deal. <3
This post is mainly to say that the existence of this picture makes my brain hurt at the same time it makes me very happy. :)

writing and insomnia and Southland, oh my!
Aug. 4th, 2009 04:57 amCan't sleep! Probably because I am on vampire time. And because I walked over to Tom's Restaurant and had like three cups of coffee and a bunch of greasy food at midnight while I tried to figure out my screenplay.
Which I guess I could stand to talk about some more. I'm in this screenwriting class about adapting prose into screenplays, which is actually very enjoyable.
( whoops. we writers do like to talk about our 'method,' don't we? I am such a cliche )
Anyway, I really just wanted to post about Christian Bale and Kermit the Frog having a lot in common, and how much better my life is thanks to that post. :D
Oh! And the other thing, now I remember. When I couldn't sleep last night, I decided to rewatch the first couple of eps of Southland (WHICH YOU SHOULD ALL WATCH) and make notes. Voila: spoilers for Southland 1.01-1.02.
( SOUTHLAND! )
Yes. As you can see, I am a very insightful person at 4am. This does not mean any of you are any less obligated to watch this show. MAKE IT SO, NUMBER ONE.
(*needs a John Cooper icon*)

before this fire of sense decay
Jun. 21st, 2009 10:25 amOkay, FINE. I've got a Twitter now. smokeofthought
Let me know yours and I will add you.
The name is from the last stanza of one of my favorite poems:
The Immortal Part
by A.E. Housman
When I meet the morning beam,
Or lay me down at night to dream,
I hear my bones within me say,
"Another night, another day."
"When shall this slough of sense be cast,
This dust of thoughts be laid at last,
The man of flesh and soul be slain
And the man of bone remain?"
"This tongue that talks, these lungs that shout,
These thews that hustle us about,
This brain that fills the skull with schemes,
And its humming hive of dreams,—"
"These to-day are proud in power
And lord it in their little hour:
The immortal bones obey control
Of dying flesh and dying soul."
"'Tis long till eve and morn are gone:
Slow the endless night comes on,
And late to fulness grows the birth
That shall last as long as earth."
"Wanderers eastward, wanderers west,
Know you why you cannot rest?
'Tis that every mother's son
Travails with a skeleton."
"Lie down in the bed of dust;
Bear the fruit that bear you must;
Bring the eternal seed to light,
And morn is all the same as night."
"Rest you so from trouble sore,
Fear the heat o' the sun no more,
Nor the snowing winter wild,
Now you labour not with child."
"Empty vessel, garment cast,
We that wore you long shall last.
—Another night, another day."
So my bones within me say.
Therefore they shall do my will
To-day while I am master still,
And flesh and soul, now both are strong,
Shall hale the sullen slaves along,
Before this fire of sense decay,
This smoke of thought blow clean away,
And leave with ancient night alone
The stedfast and enduring bone.
Let me know yours and I will add you.

- Time Out NY video -- William H. Macy at a wine tasting bar: This is pretty straight-up near-advertisement, but when William H. Macy is cracking jokes, who the hell cares? I love that guy. Someone write me more Sam Donovan/Dana SN fic, would ya?
- There is apparently a Floating Pool here in New York during the summers! How did I not know this? I bet it's not open on Fourth of July, but it would be awesome if it were, don't you think? More info on the history of the Floating Pool here; apparently there used to be several floating public bath houses in that area around the turn of the century. Isn't that cool?
- You Actually Said That Online: An Homage to the Mighty Intellectualism of the Comment Thread. I discovered this blog through Thrillist (their review is hilarious), and it's totally fun. I love how out-of-context things are; it's like an abstracted, haiku version of fandom_wank crossed with the Darwin Awards. Beautiful.
- Independent Spirits Expo. AKA lots and lots of free, bizarre liquor. I am so there next week. :D
- shopgoodwill.com: It's like eBay or Craigslist, only for charity. I'm down with that.
(P.S. Side note to
junebug_waltz: can you help me at some point? I want to buy an inexpensive old SLR to take pictures with, and they have a bunch there for cheap, but I don't know which ones are actually deals or not. *makes big eyes at the photography major* Help me, Obi-wan Eryn, you're my only hope!)

I got my hair cut and the color re-done, then went for a deep tissue massage. I feel great. Like a puddle. A pretty, red-headed puddle with friends to whom I can send inappropriate texts. :D When I am rich and famous, massages are going to be my indulgence. Forget owning five houses or designer drugs, those are for saps. Give me a personal masseuse who will pound the crap out of my muscles ever week.
I like being done with school, guys. I read a book yesterday (Stargazer by Claudia Gray, which I started in like, April, and haven't had time to even look at much less read since then). It was delightful. I have moved on to David Maurer's The Big Con. Vampires and con men -- life does not get much better. Ooh, I bet vampires would be great con men. Somebody write that.
In other news, my dad is on a roadtrip. He will be in town tomorrow -- which should be interesting, because my dad is one of those people I cannot picture in New York; it's like matter and anti-matter, there's just something fundamentally opposite about the two -- and then we're driving up to Katie's school for graduation. I'm hoping I get to drive. It's been months, and I love it.

It's weird, but I find I'm often most productive when utterly exhausted. I think it's because i makes me feel like a shark -- if I stop swimming, I'll sink. Hence, I got up at 7:30, shot my video exercise, cleaned the entire kitchen and my room, cleared out my three scary inboxes, made smoothies, and am currently packing for the weekend/preparing to return my camera to the equipment room/print out next week's readings for my martial arts films class. *is virtuous*
Randomly -- I like this quote, from a Robert Bresson's Notes on a Cinematographer excerpt I read for directing class:
"My movie is born first in my head, dies on paper, is resuscitated by the living persons and real objects I use, which are killed on film but, placed in a certain order and projected on to a screen, come to life again like flowers in water."
Isn't that awesome?
On a less literary note, I bought my SXSW wristband yesterday and my plane ticket to Austin last weekend. I am ready to party, guys.

YAY! :D Except, I have that one line from The Sound of Music stuck in my head. You know the one.
It's really cool watching it fall outside my window because there are all kinds of crazy air currents going on in the alley/airshaft/whatever, and I have hot chocolate and marshmallows and a down comforter. Unfortunately, I also have a final project to finish. But I have good company and dinner and writing to look forward to, and then flying home! :) So YAY SNOW.

Good news! You guys remember how the airline lost my luggage (containing 90% of my belongings) when I flew up here at the beginning of September? Well, they found them again, three months and a detour to Rio de Janeiro later. They should be delivered tonight! I plan to buy champagne and invite some friends over and then bitch out the fucking claims agents until they pay me the money I already spent on replacing shit they told me they lost.
On a more fannish note,
( I finally finished The West Wing. )
I moved on after TWW, and oh my god, you guys. The Middleman is the BEST THING EVER. I just finished all the episodes -- which took longer than usual, considering how often I had to pause and laugh my ass off and/or ogle Matt Keeslar and/or Natalie Morales. Mostly MK, to be honest (which, considering I have a pretty darn healthy crush on NM, should tell you something). I can't figure out why, but he seriously hits some buttons for me. He's got the Fraser thing, and the snark thing, and the earnest thing, the forearms-inna-white-dress-shirt thing, and the looks-really-great-naked thing, plus a thing about kicking in doors that is new to me but is insanely hot. Even his alter-ego was doing it for me (the fact that he looked bizarrely like the guy from this past summer, sans eyepatch but complete with tattoos and motorcycle and really great ass). Rrrowr.
I don't even know where to start with the love, but if you've never heard of The Middleman before, let me point you to 101 Reasons to Love The Middleman. I can add a couple of my own, too:
102) I'm pretty sure that in addition to the Indiana Jones, Highlander, Star Wars, Dune, Ghostbusters, James Bond, Die Hard, etc. references, they just threw in a Colbert Report reference. WORD, writers. Rock out with your bad selves.
103) "My Little Pony!" As an exclamation. Among others. SO MUCH LOVE.
The show is clever and hilarious and creative and LOADS of fun and has great female characters, and I will seriously cry if it doesn't come back again.
You should all go watch it like, right now.
The plan is sheer elegance in its simplicity. :D
