Hey, so I know I was absent and internet-challenged for the past week. So in case you missed it:

SOUTHLAND WAS RENEWED FOR A THIRD SEASON!

Ten new episodes come January 2011, hells yeah! I had only the tiniest of tiny hopes that this show would be renewed, and I am THRILLED that TNT exceeded my expectations.

*twirls happily*

[livejournal.com profile] ethrosdemon has written a very interesting post about Southland, and issues of perception and being a storyteller when you're a woman.

it’s something new...—not a show made by men for women, but a show made by women for everyone (but mostly other women).

Southland isn’t a cop show so much as it is a digital, serialized piece of cinema verite about these certain human beings. I suppose I would compare it to The Hurt Locker, another work called "gritty" by men who then boggle that women were involved in making it. Here, the word "gritty" means that men think women don't comprehend complex emotions/aren't interested in seeing them in media/they're really surprised that women are subtle.

Not just that. Men don’t just boggle that women made it—they boggle because women made the work, and they can relate to it.
Very thought-provoking! I recommend reading. I've already gone and given my two cents, although it turned more into a quarter... *thumbs up*

I had a few things piling up in tabs, so here's some clean-up sharing:

1. Have y'all been reading Ben McKenzie's celeb guest blogs about Southland over at TVGuide.com? He's writing one for every S2 episode, and they're really quite good. He has a clear, direct style, gets his points across succinctly, and quite obviously understands what the show is trying to do, and what he's doing as an actor. I find them very interesting.

Entries for: 2.01 "Phase Three", 2.02 "Butch and Sundance", 2.03 "U-Boat"; all entries listed here.

2. I'm pretty sure most of you have read the AfterElton interview with Michael Cudlitz already, but have the link again. It's not the most highly intellectual interview out there, but is rather blessed with a practical, down-to-earth point of view that I enjoy.

I thought this exchange was of particular interest: short Q&A excerpt )

and then I tangent into Sherlock Holmes again, some more )

Wow, that was some damn good television.

In conclusion: SOUTHLAND YAY! ♥

I found this blog entry on Southland 2.02 "Butch and Sundance" very interesting. The blogger is a veteran ex-cop, and most of his comments relate to the show's realistic depictions of police procedure and experience. (His only real criticism seemed to be disappointment that the car had blown up, since that very rarely happens, even when they catch on fire.)

It's one of the things I love about Southland; there are certain stories that just have that ring of truth, which springs either from excellent research or real personal experience. Things like Generation Kill or Band of Brothers have it, for obvious reasons. But usually it's in little ways -- for example, having now lived in New York, I can tell when someone's writing New York having only seen it in the movies, versus writing New York having lived and loved there.

- Okay, so. I may never take a roadtrip again. D:

- Every time I try to eject my external hard drive and get that "Device Whatever cannot be stopped right now" message, I think of the Eyes Only monologue from Dark Angel: "Do not attempt to adjust your set. This is a Streaming Freedom video bulletin. The cable hack will last exactly sixty seconds. It cannot be traced, it cannot be stopped, and it is the only free voice left in this city."

- This is a nice post about why Southland is awesome and you should all be watching it. In summation: Lydia Adams, Ben Sherman, John Cooper; but she is much more eloquent about it. :)

Guys! Don't forget to watch the S2 premiere of Southland on TNT tonight at 10pm EST/9pm CST!

I AM SO EXCITED. Those of you who know the show should come join me in my excitement!

:D \o/ :D \o/ :D *twirls*

So, I'm not the hugest proponent of Twitter -- I have an account and use it occasionally, but for the most part I think it's a huge time-sink with superficial qualities, and that's not something to which I want to devote my time.

However, one very cool thing (which can also be a drawback) is the accessibility that let me ask Michael Cudlitz a question about Southland (he plays John Cooper, for those who haven't seen him be awesome on it) and get an answer. ♥

In other news today, I discovered we have magically unpaid-for HBO! I was flicking channels grumpily, to avoid yet more news about the guy who flew a plane into a building in my hometown, and stumbled across HBO's new movie Temple Grandin, about the eponymous high-functioning autistic woman who has done some really brilliant work on animal behavior in the livestock industry. I knew it had to be HBO because I'd caught an interview with Temple Grandin on NPR where they talked about the movie, and even played a bit of audio (which helped spark my interest in the film, because Clare Danes sounded exactly like the real Temple Grandin did on the air), so I recognized it. Anyway, it was already a good hour in, but I watched the rest anyway -- something I never do -- because it was just that good. Now I have to wait until Saturday to watch the rest...

(On a totally shallow note, I was really tickled to see that TG was a fan of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. in college. It's a scene where she's describing the action to her blind roommate while they watch MFU [loudly, and oblivious to the annoyance of the other people watching], which was great for other reasons but kicked my "I'm fond of people who are fond of things I love" button.)

Aaaand then I got into an utterly pointless argument with my dad about autism (that was really an argument about the way he argues and, IMO, issues he's having with his best friend who was recently diagnosed with Asperger's). So that was fun.

Oh, hurrah! TNT now has a promo for S2 of Southland! (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] hackthis for posting first) Not only am I REALLY EXCITED about some of the clips, I'm utterly thrilled that TNT is promoting the heck out of the show – and doing it right, by talking about the qualities that make it great, how much the fans and critics love it, and the reasons it fits on their network.

In case anyone needs the link again: TNT has the first three episodes up here on their website. The fourth is airing tonight, and will likely be up on the website soon. GO WATCH NOW! :D

I'm particularly fond of TNT at the moment, because of a) SOUTHLAND S2, b) promoting Southland, and c) this press release, wherein they proudly (optimistically) describe themselves as "home to some of television’s most powerful female characters." And then put action to word by greenlighting a new procedural starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander. ♥

Hey guys, you want to know how much of a nerd I am? When spoilery things that happened on White Collar )

I remember doing thesis research and reading about the props people for Thunderball getting a call from like, the CIA, asking "So how long does it really work for?" And the props department's all "Uh, as long as you can hold your breath?" CIA: "So...how long?" Props: "*headdesk*"

Man, that was a fun paper.

and some more White Collar spoilers )

And then we watched the Southland episode (taped on a real-life VCR, because we're old school like that). And then Katie and I decided that we should watch all the rest of the seven aired episodes, so we did. I think this makes this my third full rewatch? Not counting the good-parts rewatches. I really really love this show. *hands*

In other news, I kinda signed on with a bartending/event waitstaff temp agency today! Orientation is tomorrow. YAY MONEYMAKING OPPORTUNITIES. \o/

Hi guys! For those of you who maybe saw me gleeking out about Southland the other day but thought "Oh noes, but I don't get TNT," you'll be happy to know that they've put the full episode up streaming on their website:

Southland 1.01 "Unknown Trouble"

You guys you guys! Southland was EVEN BETTER than I thought it would be! I know I've seen it before, but there was a LOT of new footage, to the point of really surprising me. And TNT aired it without commercials (and then showed an extended preview of that new Mel Gibson movie, yawn, and then scenes from new Leverage yay), which I love. And I had forgotten how much I love the characters -- especially John Cooper, Lydia Adams, and Ben Sherman (okay, and Chickie, and Janila), but really all of them. And I know that it only gets better and the characters only get more interesting. I am having a renaissance! YAY.

Okay, I'm gonna shut up now and just do this -> :D

:D :D :D
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (southlandcooperpatch)
Hi guys! I'm here to tell you that you should all watch Southland tonight! *uses magical powers to make it so, Number One*

IDK if you missed my ridiculous amounts of love for it when I watched it over the summer, but I love it A LOT -- which is a quite a feat, considering that it was a mid-season replacement with only 7 episodes at that point.

The saddest thing to happen during fall premiere season was when NBC (in their infinite retarded version of wisdom that led to The Jay Leno Debacle) canceled the show without even airing the six episodes ordered and produced for the second season. MORONS.

But then, miracle of miracles! You know how when a show is wrongfully canceled, everyone secretly hopes another network will pick it up? And you also know how this never ever happens, except when you're Buffy? Well, TNT (in their actual wisdom, which leads to shows like Leverage and The Closer) picked up the show! I was so happy, I can't even tell you. I posted in ginormous letters of happiness, if that tells you anything. Also, I am more excited about this show coming back than I am about any of the other shows coming off hiatus this month (which incudes Leverage, Burn Notice, White Collar, Chuck, Psych, and many other shows I adore)

Anyway, it's re-premiering on TNT tonight and will run through all the aired AND unaired episodes. I've also been told they're including all the material that couldn't be aired on a broadcast network (which I hope includes all the cursing :D), so even if you saw it before, it's well worth watching again.

And then TNT might pick it up for reals if it does well! So please, do me and you a favor and watch, okay? It makes me really happy.

(Actualfax pimp post to follow, with pictorial evidence of hotness and character details and all kinds of stuff about how even the producers are awesome, but that will take time and I wanted to get this out now. :D But you can be assured that I have a lot of supporting evidence! I was a film major, okay? It's What I Do.)

\o/!

TNT Picks Up Southland!

YOU GUYYYYYS. YOU GUYS, THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY! YOU ARE ALL HEREBY ORDERED TO WATCH THE ENTIRE RUN WHEN IT AIRS, I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK. DO IT FOR ME.

*TWIRLS*

Southland might have a new home at TNT

*crosses fingers SO HARD*

The TNT execs will be my new favorite people if this is true. (They already have my love and affection for Leverage, but I'm talking devotion, here.)

Southland cancelled

I'm gonna go off and cry pray that it gets picked up by another network, although I don't have much hope of that.

I don't know what the fuck NBC thinks it's doing with its whole self-reinvention bullshit. Being the Scared Of Good Television Network or the Jay Leno Network isn't good marketing strategy, dumbasses.

Ugh, I should be doing reading for class tomorrow. Unfortunately, this means either a) reading dense film criticism or b) reading James Joyce. So instead I am fucking around on the internet and watching Psych and moaning in pain from my pilates class earlier. Owwwwwww. (please don't tell me that senioritis is setting in already...)

A List of Random Things That Have Crossed My Mind Recently:

- I saw a guy with a "Consent is Sexy" shirt the other day. I really think this would make an interesting fic challenge. *waves magic wand*

- There really should be more Southland fic in the world to tide me over until the premiere in October. But I've been made happy by two pieces recently: the first We Are The Same, a fusion with Homicide: Life on the Street, which is pretty cool. But what really made me clap my hands and twirl around like River Tam a crazy person? [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge wrote a Southland fic! He is one of my favorite fandom writers, and has that annoying ability to walk into a fandom and nail it perfectly first time out. I'm not going to complain, though, because Protective Custody gives some amazingly good Cooper POV, along with being a damn nice partnership piece. Maybe I'll go read it again now...

- I saw a bit of this Elizabeth Bishop poem tacked up on some cheesy bulletin board on campus, but I loved the line "have we room / for one more folded sunset, still quite warm?" so I looked up the full thing. It's much more biting than that image led me to expect.

- This video of a group of people pulling off a con (the "Good Samaritan") makes me want to write Leverage fic. Or at least finish that post I'm working on about David Maurer's The Big Con and Leverage and con men throughout the ages.

- I finally watched the Middleman lost episode table read from ComicCon. OMG I'd forgotten how much I love them.

- In the course of my weird project last weekend (don't ask), I may have kinda developed a tiny crush on this YouTube channel host. She's this adorable Asian girl with an Australian accent, and she occasionally makes entire videos about winking. Or maybe I was sleep-deprived, who knows.

- I was super-excited about Tim Burton's upcoming Alice In Wonderland live-action movie just on the basis of Tim Burton being the perfect heir to Lewis Carroll's particular brand of weirdness, but -- dude, I didn't realize he'd cast Mia Wasikowska as Alice! The casting of Alice can make or break this particular story, and having seen Miss Wasikowska (gosh, her name is fun to say) knock the role of Sophie on In Treatment out of the park, well, color me thrilled. She's gonna ROCK. Plus, there's Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Christopher Lee, Crispin Glover, Michael Sheen, and Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat (OMG perfect). Their casting director must've had an orgasm from the sheer cinematic serendipity of that lineup.

- Speaking of Stephen Fry, he tweeted this gorgeous link the other day. I think I have to agree with him that #11 is my favorite.

- In the pursuit of happiness procrastination an old LJ exchange I had regarding Sam and Dean dressed in that leg-baring armor the Greeks wore (which is all the fault of this story, which is not really a good AU, but still manages to be a fun story -- the characters are OOC and oddly changed to Roman names. But they're not necessarily badly characterized. Which means it's basically a historical Roman gay romance with two main characters pre-cast as Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins, featuring Jensen Ackles wearing Thracian armor and fighting as a gladiator and the both of them arguing classical philosophy and pining, so I'm not complaining). Anyway, it got me poking around my old journal entries, which is loads of fun. For instance, I found the previously mentioned exchange, which happened to include a rather prescient discussion of Sam and Dean's relationship with their father in light of something my Classical Myth prof said; the time I got to see the total solar eclipse in Turkey because I was up at 5am; an alarmingly thinky response to Pirates of the Caribbean 3; the definition of petrichor, which is the smell of rain falling on dry ground (there are scientific reasons for it!); that post I made trying to figure out Benton Fraser's birthday which is also alarmingly in-depth but was terribly fun; one of [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge's old House fics, which made me want to start watching again (worth it, y/n?); and aww, my first impressions of SPN, all the way back when Sarah Shahi was still "Will's girlfriend Jenny from Alias" instead of "completely awesome Det. Dani Reese from Life." :D I have to say, the latter did make me start missing the more grounded elements of S1; they've lost more than a bit of Sam and Dean's connection to the people they're saving. The "saving people" part of Dean's oft-repeated "saving people, hunting things" has become awfully abstract.

Probably should cut-tag, but waaaaay too lazy. :(

Heads up! The first four episodes of Southland (WHICH YOU SHOULD ALL SEE) are streaming online! They'll be up from now until August 27th, and then they'll be putting up the next three up September 20th. The premiere is the 25th. :D

You can make me (and yourself!) happy by watching the episodes at the NBC page or on the Hulu page.
