I was just thinking -- I love how in Star Trek, whenever they're like "It's an attack on Earth!", what that really means is "OMG, it's an attack on San Francisco/Starfleet!" Just like how in Doctor Who, the aliens always attack London; in Torchwood, it's always Cardiff (lol). Comics movies really likes going after New York City, as do a lot of unaffiliated disaster movies, although occasionally Los Angeles gets to see the end of the world. And...I'm running out of examples, but you know what I mean?

If you were aliens and planning to attack Earth, where would you start? I would personally pick the city farthest away from the nearest superheroes (probably Paris). And then, set up a diversion on the opposite side of the planet. I'm just sayin'.

OMG YAY

Dear Anonymous Person Who Just Gifted Me With 12 Months Paid Account Time + Extra Userpics,

I LOVE YOU.

Love, Me

P.S. Who are you?

So...I'm waaay behind on internet stuff. I owe several emails, many replys, and lots of fic reviews. This is just sort of clearing out some things that have been sitting in a Notepad file on my computer for the duration of finals. Feel free to skip. Oh, and if you get a comment from me on something that happened a month ago...that's just me catching up. Toodles!

Bah. I've been needing to update for a while, but first I was Finals!Girl, followed Recluse!Girl alternating with Sleeping!Girl, then TVegetable!Girl, and now my brain is fried from four hours of a deadly boring class to get my TABC (Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission) Server Certification so I can (hopefully) get a job as a bartender and make more than minimum wage. Yay. Therefore, I give you some little lists rather than complete sentences.

I've been awake for 24 hours. (I don't count the hour I lay in bed mostly-awake and the 45 minutes I spent making my arms lose sensation on that desk in Butler Library as "sleep"). I still haven't finished my Classical Myth paper, but that's okay, because I sent my prof (the amazing one, the one who has that theory that I SPN-geeked about) a desperate email at 6 this morning begging (coherently and sedately) for an extension.

I can see you don't believe me that I was both coherent and sedate. I have therefore included the text of the email. Keep in mind that I composed this remarkable appeal at six. This morning. I'm amazed at myself... So there, Doubting Thomases )

Why am I doing this instead of sleeping? Lord knows. Anyway, she wrote back saying no penalty if I have it in before the 3rd. I have to see her after class, which is at 2:40. The paper I did finish, for my seminar, was awesome. I'm proud of it (well, except the conclusion. It's...un-spectacular), which is exciting for me, because I haven't been proud of anything else I've written this semester. Some of it I've been actively ashamed to have written. So the fact that I wrote that one paper well made me totally okay with not having finished the CM paper, and now it's just the cherry that I won't be penalized for it. Although I'm going to feel completely intimidated talking to my incredibly erudite little professor.

Why am I still typing?

Do I regret spending a dozen hours hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] maribou413 Saturday night and rewatching the first 7 episodes of SPN instead of working? Not a chance. :) And next weekend, we add alcohol to the mix. Woo-hoo!

Seriously. I'm going to stop typing...now.

OMG GIP!

It's 5am and I'm watching the NASA TV live video webcast of the total solar eclipse from Side (SEE-day), Turkey. This is mainly because I slept all afternoon and now am wide awake, but I also just sort of think it's cool. Coverage runs from 5am to 7:30am.

I am so, so nerdy. But not as nerdy as the scientists anchoring this webcast, which is comforting.

This is so cool. I'm thankful for my recently weird sleeping habits for the first time.

What am I doing instead of writing my paper? I'm translating Spanish Romantic poetry. About pirates. *sigh* At least I'm having a fairly good time of it. I love this piece; the chorus gets stuck in my head, although sometimes I forget the third line of the stanza and drive myself nuts. "Que es mi barco mi tesoro..." If anyone wants, I was toying with the idea of recording myself reciting the poem, and I could send it to you. So, you know, you hear what it really should sound like in all its original glory, even if you don't really know what it's saying. Oh, and as a note: my translations are pretty literal; I don't try to futz around with things to evoke the same rhythm or rhyme pattern--I think you lose enough through translation as it is. If you want rhyme and rhythm, read the original and then look at the translation to understand the meaning behind the language barrier. Or, you know, ask me to read it for you. Enjoy!

P.S. Let me know if you see any errors.

ETA: I giggle every time I get an email about student government elections, because the use of the acronym for the Student Government Association makes the subject line read "SGA Elections." *g*

I haven't really had the time or inclination or energy recently to put together a real LJ post, so I've just had a couple of Notepad files that I've been jotting down random thoughts in so I can later develop them into postable material. This is some of what I've accumulated from the past few weeks.

On a last note, I just came from hanging out with Lydia and Julia and Christie down the hall. It's Julia's birthday today, and at midnight Lydia led a contingent of friends into the bathroom where she was taking a shower and surprised her with cake and song. They have the cutest video footage of it ever. I came too late for the shower part, but I think I got the better end of the bargain: toasting to Julia's health in Ukrainian ("Nah zdo-rrov-yah"; Lydia has Ukrainian heritage) with a shot of vodka, helping them eat the cake, and hanging out with Lydia, Christie, and Julia and talking about Eastern Europe (Christie is the daughter of diplomats and has lived in Serbia and Poland and Rome and Belgrade). My day has gotten significantly better.

A fabulous moment in time: last night I was walking down 50th towards my partyhelping job on 48th and 1st Ave. There I was, standing on the corner of 50th and Park Ave, and what do I see? The exterior shot of the Sports Night "office building." Just...there. And the shadows were exactly the same as they always are in that shot, and the angle was identical, and I was ridiculously happy about it all.

You know what's sick? I'm sitting here trying to write my damn English paper, thinking about Beauty and the Beast because that's what the stupid paragraph's about, and my mind is suddenly off thinking about Brokeback Mountain or "Doctor Who" or "Due South," and without even trying, I've composed whole essays in my head, arguing against a point in one of the BM reviews I read, or explaining why exactly Rose and the Doctor's relationship is so compelling, or analyzing the motivations of Benton Fraser. And then my mind wavers back into place in front of the computer screen and I wonder why the fuck I have so much to say about those fictional characters and the relevance they have to me and to society, but can't write the same about the fictional characters in fairy tales if my life (okay, grade) depends on it. Also, none of these musings are in Chinese, which sucks, since I have to present a monologue tomorrow, and it would be great if I could blurt out stuff in Chinese as easily as it come out in my head. Where's the TARDIS when you need it (her?)?

Okay, so maybe not Pride & Prejudice, giant inflatable dinosaurs, and the scandalous use of Andy Warhol stickers like I promised. But soon!

Snow

As my roommate wrote on the door this morning, "SNOW and meeting HEATH LEDGER -- does life get better than this?"

While I don't get to meet Heath Ledger as she does, life is still pretty damn good. Plus, the snow means I can't escape my homework, seeing as how I haven't yet bought rain/snow boots.

My goodness, I am sooo hungry. They don't start serving brunch at Hewitt until 11 on the weekends, which is just evil, especially considering that I haven't eaten a proper meal since 9:30 yesterday. In fact...I don't think I've eaten *anything* since breakfast on Friday. Hmm. Anyway, I'll be stopping in the middle of writing this to go stuff my face, which will be excellent.

This week was awful. I'd somehow managed to get my sleeping schedule so out of whack that I was sleeping when everyone else was awake, and awake when everyone else was asleep. And I had craploads of work to do that I just kept avoiding and putting off by procrastinating and reading fic and LJ-ing. It was not fun. But I've fixed it now (I hope). After finishing my Women's & Gender Studies project and turning it in barely under the wire of the 4pm deadline, I came back here and stumbled my way through a couple of hours of awakeness talking to Eva and Emily/Bethany/Kacie (because really, they are so often like one person; you know it's true, Bethany), and some to Paola and Inga and Leigh and Andre. I crashed around 6 or so, and slept through until 4:30 this morning. I couldn't go back to sleep, so I computered for a while. I felt like I *should* go back to sleep, though, so I laid down but didn't actually fall asleep. At around 7 I gave up and started reading The Will of the Empress again, finished it, took a shower, and am now doing this while waiting for the dining hall to open. Speaking of which...*runs off to eat*

Sorry to anyone who's already seen this, but I had to share with some of the people on my flist. Ganked from geekwriter143. It makes me think of a Firefly quote. Points to anyone who can guess which one.

By the way, looking back over some of my posts, I realize I don't really know how to make it so a link to a person's LJ appears the right way. You know, with the little person next to the name and all bolded correctly. How does this work? Where did everyone learn how to do this? *is confused* Friends, country(wo)men, lend me your knowledge!

Well, that almost made sense.

Another link: for those of you who have never been to Meg's Boyfriend of the Week, you're missing out. The gimmick: every week (hah, not really that often) Meg picks a new boyfriend and does a write-up on him. Generally, this involves rambling commentary that never fails to get a laugh, random personal anecdotes, some kind of biographical information, and a review of some of the movies/TV shows/etc. the person has been in (since most are actors). She is hilarious, people. At the end of the entry, she assigns a "MacGyver Score Factor" (since he is the Boyfriend against whom all others are compared), accompanied by a usually-ridiculous explanation. Plus, she has great taste. For example, she recently featured the entire male cast of Serenity. Other former Boyfriends include a range from Colin Firth to Josh Holloway to "Sock Puppet" (seriously, read this one), from John Hannah to Johnny Depp to the mascot of her local Minor League Baseball team. Meg also has a big soft spot for geeks and underdogs, as can be seen in her current Boyfriend. I mean, she featured Kevin Weisman! Marshall from Alias! She rocks! Go check her out if you never have.

My roommate found a Spanish HP fansite the other day. Mad Eye Moody=Ojo Loco Moody. Hee.

I'm totally loving this song. Thanks go to Bethany (infinitenights) for giving me Placebo.

"Nobody lives in New York because it's clean, they live in New York because it's fucking New York and that makes up for the fact that there are rats as big as your head and human feces on the sidewalk and a layer of grime on everything."

geekwriter143 wrote this here. I really liked it for some reason.

You know, looking back at my post on April 26th, I do believe I made a few erroneous selections on that last posting. Then again, I didn't know who Gary Dourdan was at the time, since CSI has been a recent thing for me. I can't believe that neither George Eads or Eric Szmanda aren't on that list, though. Total gyp. I know I would rather do Nick than Warrick (it's all about the attitude; Warrick is just a bit too angst-angst-angst; Nick and Greg have his intensity and levity). As for the actors...well, I wouldn't say no. Also, I believe I can forgive myself for not remembering that Josh Charles and Peter Krause are the names of lovely actors who play the equally lovely Casey McCall and Dan Rydell on Sports Night. Silly Lindsey.
