I recently managed to read a couple of therapy-related fics in short succession, and since fic featuring therapy is one of my favorite things, I thought I'd put together a recs post:

1. Eight Sessions (Due South, Fraser/Kowalski)
My very favorite of all my favorite therapy fics: after a bad on the job shooting, Ray and Fraser have to go to mandatory counseling sessions. And if anyone needs therapy more than Benton Fraser, or could possibly be worse at it, I would really like to see that. This is hilarious, heartbreaking, and heartwarming by turns. I'm sure most DS fans have already read this story, but it's always worth another read. ♥

2. Like Sailing and Home Runs (Sports Night, Dan/Casey)
Dan Rydell, and his therapy sessions following the end of the series. I just re-read this, and it's wonderful. It reads just like an episode of the show, and Dan's therapist Abby is brilliant, and the ins and outs of his sessions are complex and beautifully crafted.

3. Cartography By Touch (Stargate: Atlantis, McKay/Sheppard)
So, there's a reason that the Atlantis expedition has a psychologist on board. Sheppard is traumatized on an off-world mission, and slowly works through it. Great Heighmeyer, great dealing with the issues, great world-building stuff on Atlantis. (Watch the warnings, though.) There's also a Rodney-POV sequel/companion piece, History of Maps.

4. Therapy and Grapes (Life/In Treatment crossover, gen)
I was looking for In Treatment fic (of which there is very little) and found this in the process: Dani gets referred to Paul Weston for an assessment after the events of "Powerless", and he works his usual therapy magic. I kind of wanted a million more words of this, but it's quite good as it stands. Even if you've never seen In Treatment, it serves as a nice outsider-POV of Dani.

5. Abnormal Psychology (Bones/SGA crossover, gen)
This fic never fails to make me laugh. The concept? Lance Sweets becomes the new psychologist on Atlantis after Heightmeyer. AHAHAHAHAHA omg it's so good, you guys. Her Sweets-voice is genius, and if there is anyone who would mix worse with Sweets in a therapy session than John Sheppard.... HEE.

and

6. untitled commentfic (Bones/Hawaii Five-0 crossover, gen)
This is sort of a follow-up to the previous rec, although it's really unrelated in anything but spirit. Because the only person worse than John Sheppard at therapy? Is Steve McGarrett. This, of course, does not stop Sweets.

- So I just realized that I never posted the results for the unguessed pairings in the quotations ship meme a couple of weeks ago. I've now updated the post with the answers -- no one guessed Miss Parker/Jarod (The Pretender), Josh Lyman/Donna Moss (The West Wing), Olivia Dunham/Peter Bishop (Fringe), Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), or Steve McGarrett/Danny Williams (Hawaii Five-0). For shame on the last one, people. The rest I kind of expected -- serves me right for being ridiculously multifannish. The pairings that were guessed were Brad Colbert/Nate Fick (Generation Kill), Bertie Wooster/Reginald Jeeves (Jeeves & Wooster), John Watson/Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes books), Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane (Lord Peter Wimsey series), and Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski (Due South).

- I have started compulsively watching QI again. Why is Stephen Fry so awesome, seriously? I just want to be his friend, give him a hug, and sit around drinking tea and/or madeira while talking about obscure trivia. (SIGH why am I not Emma Thompson)

- Question: does anyone know where I might *ahem* look for video editing programs, with, say, an eye patch on, if you know what I mean? I've been really wanting to make some vids, but fuck if I'm going to do it with Windows Movie Maker again.

- In other, unrelated news, I can't stop listening to Janelle Monáe's song "Cold War". I'm not sure why. It's awesome. :)

Oh my god, you guys. I am so fucking bored right now. And antsy. Like, really antsy. Like, want to go swing dancing or run around the block or something, that kind of antsy. Only I can't do those things, because it is 11pm. What the hell. So instead, I'm going through some old files and finding all the half-finished memes I have hanging around. (There may be more of these coming. I am BORED, and I slept for 12 hours because work has been deathly slow and I have no responsibilities, because I am a poor excuse for an adult human being. Anyway.)

And as always -- Katie, you know me too well. Let the other kids play first. ;)

This is what happens when I start catching up on Hawaii Five-0, Castle, and Lie To Me all at the same time, and start thinking about how endearing all their prominent father-daughter relationships are.

inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (happypinkpartysombrero)
So I just realized I never posted about Yuletide stuff! Which is terrible of me; bad Lindsey, no cookie.

My gift was the utterly awesome Black Shuck, written for Neil Gaiman's A Study In Emerald. My author (WHO I LOVE) wrote a retelling of The Hound of the Baskervilles, and it's just completely wonderful -- it just nails the pastiche-but-not-quite-the-same-world writing and this version of Holmes and Watson, while also managing to be a thrilling adventure and a truly creepy horror story. I am so, so, so delighted by it, and you should all go read it immediately! Um, unless you're planning to go to sleep right afterward, in which case you might want to wait until it's light outside. :D?

I've been reading my way through the fics in a very random manner, but have some recs for Alice, Hawaii Five-0, Banlieue 13, Calvin & Hobbes, Calvin & Hobbes/Foxtrot, James Bond, Lord Peter Wimsey, Old Spice Guy metafic, Temeraire/Pride & Prejudice, and Wishbone/Vorkosigan )

I feel vaguely guilty for having the deathplague and defaulting rather than risking a crappy fic for my recipient, but them's the breaks, I guess. I tried to make up for it by beta-ing like a mofo (up till 3am two nights in a row with my sister, what what), but I may also have to do a NYR, too...
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (h50bookem)
Seriously, what is it about Hawaii Five-0? It makes my sister's brain take that "When I say 'Book 'em, Danno,' I mean it as a term of endearment" conversation and come up with this (and my current icon *points*). And then it makes my brain come up with this shit:

"I first returned to Honolulu on the trail of the killers of my father, and for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, I have remained, attached to the HPD as head of a gubernatorial taskforce."

I can also far too easily imagine them having conversations like these, or the "Come on, Fraser, just tell me the truth. Just say, I'm going to endanger your life, Ray, my friend, I'm going to endanger your life in a wildly bizarre way," or the "Do you find me attractive?" bit, or basically any of the vast majority of conversations that Fraser has with either Ray (except the ones about obeying the law, ha). Or the cross-dressing. And they already have the punching scene out of the way. And I would not put it past Steve to lick things, is all I'm saying, nor would I put it past Danny to exclaim loudly about said licking. (uh...WHOOPS LOL *is twelve*)

So basically:

Dear Due South Fans,

You will probably like Steve McGarrett and Danny Williams on Hawaii Five-0, even though their jokes are about pineapples and swimming rather than pemmican and dog-sledding. They also have Kono and Chin, so even though there are no ghosts or magical realism (aside from the fact that Steve hasn't managed to get himself killed yet), it's not like they're falling short.

I highly recommend watching this show! *thumbs up*

Love, Lindsey

P.S. If I took a poll of people who have liked both shows, I bet you would find some overlap. OH WAIT. I can take a poll! Here we go:

[Poll #1662487]
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (h50team)
I just re-watched that Criminal Minds ep with Alex O'Loughlin as the serial killer. Totally made me cry, again. *sigh*

New Hawaii Five-0 tonight! I am excited; this is the first one I'll get to watch live (which means cursing at the commercials is a tragic inevitability). I'm hoping it will involve Danny or Chin's getting their turns to be held hostage, because that would be exciting. I suppose I would also settle for finally getting Danny out of his shirt and/or into a situation where he must swim for survival. OR ALL THREE. *crosses fingers* :D

WHAT.

inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (h50team)
So I was looking at Alex O'Loughlin's IMDB profile, as you do, because Steve McGarrett, Hawaii Five-0, etc. Anyway, I had one of those amazing OH SHIT NO WAY HE WAS THAT AWESOME GUEST ACTOR moments (uh...I don't know if normal people have those, but I do).

See, do you guys remember Vincent, the serial killer in that utterly heartbreaking Criminal Minds ep "The Big Wheel" -- the OCD guy with the Buddy Holly glasses and the videotaping thing who made that odd clicking noise, with the little blind kid and the Ferris wheel scene at the end? I have always loved that character; it's one of those braintwisting CM episodes where you somehow wind up having enormous amounts of sympathy for that poor serial killer and cry at their death scene and all that. He was just so sad and likeable -- which I know doesn't change the fact that he was a serial killer, but the end of that episode always makes me cry.

ANYWAY, THAT WAS ALEX O'LOUGHLIN.

...I know, right? Go ahead, be amazed. I'll wait. :D

In all seriousness, though, my respect for him as an actor just went up about tenfold. Well played, sir.
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (weirdlifepersonalpineapple)
HI THERE, INTERNET.

Haven't posted in a while, have I? Probably because work is crazy due to it being the season for all the holiday parties, and also having a social life, and about a half-dozen doctor appointments. *sigh*

BIG NEWS: Katie and I caught up on Hawaii Five-0! PLEASE COME DISCUSS IN THE COMMENTS! I want to talk for ages about how pretty the scenery is, or how pretty the wildlife (i.e., EVERYONE on the team), or about how rapidly this show has become my happy place, only to make me wait for new episodes. But I really have to sleep at some point tonight, so I won't. I am making myself pick three things to talk about instead:

mild spoilers, I guess )

3a. The problem with working in a hotel with continental breakfasts is that I spend a great deal of time in the morning with pineapple right in front of me, reminding me of H50, while also being a giant nerd. These things lead to thought processes like: Ever since I found out that pineapple has an enzyme that literally breaks down flesh, I have had a bit of weirdness eating it. Hmm, I bet Danny would also have a problem with that. He already hates pineapple; maybe that's why. They're flesh-eating! Flesh-eating...ooh, maybe someone should write H50 zombie fic. It's set on an island, that's inherently interesting. Plus, you just know Steve would be awesome at killing zombies. They probably have a section of SEAL training all about beheading the living dead. Or he just decided he wanted to be prepared. OH WAIT -- pineapples, zombies, both flesh-eating...THE PINEAPPLES ARE CAUSING THE ZOMBIES. AHAHAHAHAHA....

...and then, I have not a single person at work to share these thoughts with. It's very sad.

Anyway, stopping there! Because I have to be awake at 5am, and then work for about 18 hours, and then do the same thing on Friday, only waking up at 4am instead. But please talk to me in comments. :D?
