I LOVE YULETIDE.

My story has gone over well with my recipient, and the treat I wrote also went over well, so I'm happy as a clam in that regard.

I received an awesome, AWESOME gift. I'd asked for In Treatment, and hardly expected to match on it, because there were only three fics on the archive for it before this one, and one of those was a crossover, and I'd requested a character that didn't even have a tag before I asked for her. But no! I got it!

I've wanted good post-S1 Sophie-centric fic for ages, because damn if that girl wasn't fantastic, and this sticks her in college and watches her roll. It is -- as will surprise no one who watched this show -- heartbreaking and frequently very difficult to experience, but so warm with empathy for Sophie, in all her arrogant, sharp-edged, vulnerable, ballsy glory, and gives her not a happy ending but an beginning where she finds happiness but earns it. God, I love Sophie, and this author just nailed her, and I am so amazingly happy with the story:

Ten Point Oh (3885 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: In Treatment
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Sophie (In Treatment)
Additional Tags: Eating Disorders, Suicidal Thoughts, Past Sexual Abuse
Summary: Sophie has her answer all prepared: it is a total smug asshole answer, full of phrases like the joy of the sport. But no-one ever asks.
(**Definitely heed the tags and warnings in the note! Especially if you share any issues with the character. Like I said -- difficult.)

I haven't read a ton of other fic, but I've definitely been enjoying all the wacky creativity that comes out of this challenge. I mean, I love that there's now piles of fic to read for Arrow and SHIELD and so on, but it just isn't Yuletide unless people are pulling off:
1. Ryan Stone from Gravity picking up hitchhikers who happen to be awesome ladies from other fandoms while coping after her ordeal in the movie;
or
2. making a high fantasy femslash story with assassins out of "Jolene" (the Dolly Parton song);
or
3. my personal favorite so far -- the medieval ballad version of how Han and Gisele get together in Fast Five. I felt obligated to read it out loud for proper effect, and it had my sister and I in delighted stitches.

YULETIDE! \o/

I recently managed to read a couple of therapy-related fics in short succession, and since fic featuring therapy is one of my favorite things, I thought I'd put together a recs post:

1. Eight Sessions (Due South, Fraser/Kowalski)
My very favorite of all my favorite therapy fics: after a bad on the job shooting, Ray and Fraser have to go to mandatory counseling sessions. And if anyone needs therapy more than Benton Fraser, or could possibly be worse at it, I would really like to see that. This is hilarious, heartbreaking, and heartwarming by turns. I'm sure most DS fans have already read this story, but it's always worth another read. ♥

2. Like Sailing and Home Runs (Sports Night, Dan/Casey)
Dan Rydell, and his therapy sessions following the end of the series. I just re-read this, and it's wonderful. It reads just like an episode of the show, and Dan's therapist Abby is brilliant, and the ins and outs of his sessions are complex and beautifully crafted.

3. Cartography By Touch (Stargate: Atlantis, McKay/Sheppard)
So, there's a reason that the Atlantis expedition has a psychologist on board. Sheppard is traumatized on an off-world mission, and slowly works through it. Great Heighmeyer, great dealing with the issues, great world-building stuff on Atlantis. (Watch the warnings, though.) There's also a Rodney-POV sequel/companion piece, History of Maps.

4. Therapy and Grapes (Life/In Treatment crossover, gen)
I was looking for In Treatment fic (of which there is very little) and found this in the process: Dani gets referred to Paul Weston for an assessment after the events of "Powerless", and he works his usual therapy magic. I kind of wanted a million more words of this, but it's quite good as it stands. Even if you've never seen In Treatment, it serves as a nice outsider-POV of Dani.

5. Abnormal Psychology (Bones/SGA crossover, gen)
This fic never fails to make me laugh. The concept? Lance Sweets becomes the new psychologist on Atlantis after Heightmeyer. AHAHAHAHAHA omg it's so good, you guys. Her Sweets-voice is genius, and if there is anyone who would mix worse with Sweets in a therapy session than John Sheppard.... HEE.

and

6. untitled commentfic (Bones/Hawaii Five-0 crossover, gen)
This is sort of a follow-up to the previous rec, although it's really unrelated in anything but spirit. Because the only person worse than John Sheppard at therapy? Is Steve McGarrett. This, of course, does not stop Sweets.

When I finally saw the 2011 Jane Eyre a few weeks ago, it reminded me of how awesome Mia Wasikowska is, so I ended up re-downloading all of the Sophie episodes of In Treatment (which is a fantastic show; damn fine acting and writing across the board). I watched the first season proper back in 2008, so I felt I could get away with just watching one character's sessions.

Anyway, I just watched all of said episodes back to back, and damn, I'd forgotten how fucking phenomenal she is. I think she was, what, 19 at the time? And it's even more impressive now that I've seen her in other things; she played a sixteen-year-old Olympic-hopeful gymnast to the hilt, and just as impeccably as she played a 19th-century orphaned Scottish governess.

NGL, I cried a lot this time through. Sophie is such a brilliant character.

As I mentioned, I've been watching In Treatment. It has me thinking about therapy, so have a poll! I hope these questions aren't too personal.
