inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (cardcatalogue)
This is mostly for my own purposes; it's likely an incomplete list, since I'm sure I watched more TV than listed, and I didn't check my sister's Netflix history for all of the movies she rented that I watched, but still. I probably saw more first-run movies in theaters this year than I ever have before, thanks to my job providing free admission.

Twenty-nine is the number of books I have lying around my room in piles, in the process of being read. These are not to-read; they have all been started to some extent or another. *sigh*

Three are from the library:

- a Lord Peter Wimsey short stories collection (I have re-checked this out SO MANY TIMES now)
- two Pippi Longstocking books (re-reading, because this fic made me all nostalgic)

Thirteen are fiction:

- Death Masks by Jim Butcher (fifth in the Dresden Files)
- The Complete Sherlock Holmes, Vol. 2 (my sister and I are reading these out loud with each other; we've stopped midway through Hound of the Baskervilles)
- Fragile Things (three short stories in; still in love with "A Study In Emerald", so I keep re-reading that and then forgetting to move on to the rest of the book)
- Hourglass by Claudia Gray (oh the shame, I am so behind on this lovely series)
- Fateful by Claudia Gray (WEREWOLVES ON THE TITANIC! I haven't actually started yet, but I've been enormously excited about it ever since [livejournal.com profile] claudiagray told me about this great idea she had, while we were drunkenly sharing a cab home)
- Sunshine by Robin McKinley (borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] katieupsidedown, I ♥ Robin McKinley)
- Naked Heat by Richard Castle (professional Castle fanfic!)
- Traitor's Moon (fourth in the series)
- Very Good, Jeeves! (what ho!)
- Busman's Honeymoon (still haven't read this, embarrassingly. I get all weird and "OH NOES there will be no more new [Sayers-written] Lord Peter after this!" about it, which I know is silly)
- Metamorphoses (Ovid is the shit, guys. Also, these stories are batshit. But they're kind of great for ideas, because when )
- The Westing Game (I never read this as a child -- which I realized on my unsuccessful hunt for our copies of Pippi Longstocking, before I gave up and hit the library -- and think I missed out there)
- Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (because I never really read it in school when we were supposed to, and not at all because Erik refers to himself as Frankenstein's monster in XMFC, nope....)

Six non-fiction:

- Unpopular Opinions by Dorothy Sayers (I'm looking forward to the jokey examinations of Sherlock Holmes canon, such as "Holmes' College Career" and "Dr. Watson, Widower"; I posted scans of a few essays from this here)
- The Monster Show: A Cultural History of Horror by David J. Skal (one of the coursebooks for my horror films class, which I loved but didn't quite finish; it's enormously fun)
- My Wicked, Wicked Ways by Errol Flynn (his autobiography, which I picked up used from a street vendor in NYC; it is written in the most ridiculously tongue-in-cheek, self-important style, and clearly full of tall tales, so I have fun with it)
- Imbibe! by David Wondrich (a wonderfully nerdy bartending recipes/history of mixology book)
- Bartender's Bible (what it says on the tin: lots and lots of drink recipes)
- Vagabonding by Rolf Potts (no relation to Pepper, I don't think. Traaaaavelling *longing eyes*)

And seven re-reads:

- Strong Poison
- Have His Carcase
- Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers (all of the Harriet Vane books of the Lord Peter series, which I am not at all re-reading for the purposes of writing a The Eagle AU, no sirree....)
- Diplomatic Immunity by Lois McMaster Bujold (where I stalled out on my epic Vorkosigan Saga re-read. I'm so close!)
- The Big Con by David Maurer (because ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥)
- The Twits by Roald Dahl
- The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery (both also added to the pile during the great Pippi Longstocking bookhunt)

It's all getting rather ridiculous. NO MORE NEW BOOKS UNTIL THESE ARE FINISHED.
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (holmeswatsonnewspaper)
For some reason, at one point I seem to have amassed a bunch of links related to the Victorian Era and/or Sherlock Holmes. Let me now post them in one big chunk. You're welcome.

1. Merlin fic rec: Drawn To Any Good (Merlin/Arthur)
This story is actually somewhat ridiculously romantic. I would call it over-the-top, if not for the fact that it actually works for me for once, because it totally matches the Victorian sensibilities the POV character (Arthur) would have. It's also set very early in the Victorian Era (one line refers to the "new queen"; Victoria was crowned in 1837), so there are touches of Regency romance in there as well -- best of both worlds! There is courting, okay. And wooing, and waltzing, and flowers, and writing letters. It's incredibly endearing and I very much enjoyed it. I was a bit uncertain about it at first, because I find that most fic where a mutual declaration comes early (as it quickly is clear that it will in this one) rapidly devolve into rambling pointlessness without the trusty romantic plot to fall back on, but this one manages to avoid that pitfall. I may be a somewhat biased, though, as there is an entire chapter comprised only of letters, and I am the world's biggest sucker for epistolary romance. The salutations alone were enough to win me over. :D

2. Poetry about Sherlock Holmes: 221B, by Vincent Starrett. It is always 1895. ♥

3. It is hard to read Sherlock Holmes (or watch Sherlock) without running into a London cab or fourteen, whether the modern version or the kind featuring horsepower in the literal sense. Reading on their history, and on The Knowledge (the incredibly rigorous tests that London cabbies have had to pass ever since 1851, to prove they know London streets inside and out, something which I find fascinating as an American and former New Yorker):
- BBC article "The History of the London Black Taxi Trade"
- article on The Knowledge
- PBS article
- Wikipedia article
- Official PDF for The Knowledge applicants
- Excerpt from book on Victorian and Edwardian horse cabs
- List of principles of policing held by various commissioners of the Metropolitan Police (including Sir Richard Mayne, who instituted The Knowledge, and thus tangentially relevant)
- A Handy Book of the Law of London Cabs and Omnibuses from 1867. Thank you, Google Books. :)

4. The Language of Flowers, sortable by flower or by meaning. I've mostly heard about this Victorian practice in context of the romantic meanings, like red roses mean "I love you". I find the platonic ones much more interesting – like "ambition of a scholar" (hollyhock) or "I mourn your absence" (zinnia; I would be lying if I said this didn't make me think of Holmes and Watson during the Great Hiatus). It's loads of fun in the same way that astrology is fun. The site is additionally interesting for the way it uses several different Victorian-era sources and shows the slight changes in meanings over time.

5. Poverty Map of London, 1898-99. This map is so cool. It depicts color-coded levels of poverty in different areas of London just before the turn of the century. *nerds*

6. A Study In Motherfucking Scarlet. AHAHAHAHA. [livejournal.com profile] katieupsidedown linked me to this ages ago, and I practically busted a rib laughing. It basically takes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study In Scarlet and paraphrases/modernizes it. Plus vigorous cursing. And acknowledgment of how much of a motherfucking badass John Watson is (I concur!). And completely overturning the politeness of the Victorian prose/subtext in favor of contemporary bluntness. Plus art. I giggle madly. :D

7. Not a link, but...I wonder sometimes about 221*A* Baker Street. I mean, who the hell lives there? What do they think of Holmes and Watson? Do they get people mistakenly knocking at their door all the time, making them wonder why the heck is up with the weirdos in London? Are they friends with Mrs. Hudson? Anyway. I'm just curious.

Bah. I've been needing to update for a while, but first I was Finals!Girl, followed Recluse!Girl alternating with Sleeping!Girl, then TVegetable!Girl, and now my brain is fried from four hours of a deadly boring class to get my TABC (Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission) Server Certification so I can (hopefully) get a job as a bartender and make more than minimum wage. Yay. Therefore, I give you some little lists rather than complete sentences.

I haven't really had the time or inclination or energy recently to put together a real LJ post, so I've just had a couple of Notepad files that I've been jotting down random thoughts in so I can later develop them into postable material. On Walking

You know, I would really actually like to be trying to sleep at the moment, believe it or not. I could be snuggled up under my nice warm down comforter getting ahead on sleep for the next week. But instead, the girls in the room next to mine are having a dance party to girly, insipid pop songs. The few moments of reprieve come when Kelly Clarkson songs come on, because I secretly like her music. And yes, I am staying in on a Saturday night reading fanfic and watching Due South DVDs (more on this later), but I partied last night, damn it. I don't need to get drunk every night on the weekend, no matter how much some people feel the need to. So, I thought I'd update since it has been brought to my attention that my LJ has been rather quiet *waves to [livejournal.com profile] maribou413*. So, here's some random thoughts I've been having.

For the record, I am VERY DISPLEASED at having to cut CJ Cregg and Remus Lupin from my list in order to make it 12. I had to use the "close-your-eyes-and-delete-the-one-your-finger-falls-on" method. VERY DISPLEASED. And yes, I ordered them alphabetically. Shut up.

1. Adrian Monk, Monk
2. Dan Rydell, Sports Night
3. Elizabeth Bennett, Pride & Prejudice
4. George Cooper, Song of the Lioness quartet
5. (Captain) Jack Sparrow, Pirates of the Caribbean
6. Lex Luthor, Smallville
7. Methos, Highlander
8. Miles Vorkosigan, Miles Vorkosigan series
9. Ms. Parker, The Pretender
10. Nick Stokes, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
11. Starbuck (Kara Thrace), Battlestar Galactica
12. Xander Harris, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Barnard rocks.

Granted, I've had a few moments this week that were definitely not happy, but on reflection, the balance has been wonderful. I mean, I'm in New York City, in the first place; New York City, one of the most wonderful cities in the world; New York City, subject of countless books, movies, and poems; New York City, home of Spider-Man, Sports Night, and (of course) Sex and the City (Cynthia Nixon/Miranda is a Barnard alum!). :)

Then there's the school, the women who have come here, and the teachers who are thrilled to their toes to teach here. If anyone tries to tell you that the people you surround yourself with don't affect the kind of person you will become, laugh in their face for me. Thus, I'm very happy with where I am.

Regarding individual instances of rocking-ness, I have made the following listlist )

Well, so it begins.

I've decided to start this LJ to satisfy my urge to keep a journal, which goes much faster by typing, rather than to entertain and inform my friends about the many things in my life I feel they should, as most people here seem to. I hope no one reads these posts, because I don't want them to.

To start things off, break the ice, etc., here's a meme I got from the LJ of liz_marcs.

Ten things that I've done that you probably haven't:

1) Stood up on the hillside at Barton Springs and bellydanced in my bikini to a man playing the bongos.

2) Danced naked in the rain.

3) Danced in the aisles while Poncho Sanchez and his band played on stage, breaking the ice and getting more people to dance until the aisles were filled and the men and women there were moving with his music instead of sitting like lumps and just listening to it.

4) Gone swing-dancing for the first time ever, learned the basic step while in the ballroom, danced with a dozen guys and emerged three hours later with a love of swing that has lasted two years now.

5) Bellydanced by a fire at a campsite on Lake Travis.

6) Gone to the Salsa Festival and danced the cha-cha with a complete stranger, not having really danced that step ever before, and not made more than a few small mistakes.

7) Danced in a club in Austria wearing cowboy boots and a miniskirt, not wanting to leave until forced to.

8) Two-stepped at the Broken Spoke with my best friend and her boyfriend and his family for the first time ever, again in those cowboys boots that accompanied me to Austria.

9) Done a silly little dance after making out like a bandit at a garage sale, buying a bunch of jewelry, a great pair of boots, a tie (soon-to-be belt), a hair holder, and a fabulous, 50s-ish, black, full-length wool coat with a hood for ...(drumroll please)... ten dollars. HECK YEAH.

10) Danced with my two friends at a free concert by Los Lonely Boys, pushing our way as far to the front as possible, then helping get an encore (like we did at Poncho Sanchez) by yelling "Otro! Otro!", then running off singing and picking flowers to put in my two friends' hair as we skipped down the sidewalk to our car and drove to Amy's Ice Creams.

***

And those are all just my dancing stories. :)
