So...I never got around to actually crossposting about the Amplificathon 2013 podfics I did. *is super belated* I figured I should probably get on that before Amplificathon 2014 rolled around.

I joined up a week before the deadline, and I'd never recorded anything before, so I started with my own stories and a couple of Katie's. When I inevitably fumble my way through the early part of a learning curve, I prefer it be my own stuff (or my clone's) that bears the brunt of it. Anyway:

The Sincerest Form of Flattery

inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (holmes221B)
Fandoms: Sherlock Holmes, Due South, Numb3rs, House, Psych, Castle
Rating: G
Pairing/Characters: Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John Watson, Benton Fraser, Ray Kowalski, Charlie Eppes, Larry Fleinhardt, Dr. Gregory House, Dr. James Wilson, Shawn Spencer, Burton Guster, Kate Beckett, Richard Castle
Warnings: discussion of pediatric cancer; rampant abuse of Sherlock Holmes quotations
Summary: All detectives are Sherlock Holmes, and they all have their Watsons. Six iterations of Holmes moments in six fandoms.

Notes: In addition to the cited quotes at the beginning of each section, each title is also from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories -- the first obviously from A Study In Scarlet, the second from The Valley of Fear, the third from "The Retired Colourman," the fourth from "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client," the fifth from The Hound of the Baskervilles, and the last coming full circle back to A Study In Scarlet. The second section was inspired by the POV character's own quote. The article mentioned in the last section is a real Victorian-era article, but is likely both anachronistic and not to be found in any publication Watson would actually read. No particular spoilers, but the Due South section is set sometime during season 3/4, the House section sometime during season 6, and the rest are scattered throughout their respective canons. Title from the Charles Caleb Colton quote. Enormous thanks to [livejournal.com profile] thespatz for putting up with me while I dragged her through my millions of rounds of revisions, and for giving me good advice along the way.

I'm going to borrow Resonant's modification -- feel free to ask me for a line from any of these you're curious about! In fact, feel free to ask for several. I'm not stingy. :)

This is what happens when I start catching up on Hawaii Five-0, Castle, and Lie To Me all at the same time, and start thinking about how endearing all their prominent father-daughter relationships are.

Hello again, everyone!

My roadtrip concluded late-ish on Friday, after an absolutely lovely week of visiting with friends and relatives and barely checking my email every two days. (Someday, I will catch up again. Sorry to everyone waiting for replies!)

I keep saying that I'm going to take a day and not do anything, after all the driving and being helpful and whatnot, but then I end up, like, cleaning the kitchen and doing the laundry and going to the store and cooking ALL THE THINGS dinner. It's like a sickness; the people I visited during the roadtrip can tell you that I was showing symptoms even then. The groom of the wedding I attended last weekend was actually reduced to ordering me to sit down and take a break and stop helping (bless his heart). :D?

Anyway. In an attempt to make this post barely/vaguely fannish, have a vid rec! Suddenly I See is an absolutely delightful Castle vid, all about the most fabulous people in the show – namely, the ladies. :D Seriously, it's entirely about Alexis, Martha, and Kate Beckett, and proves how Rick Castle's life would be such a sadder, less interesting place without them around. ♥

ZOMBIES!

Have I mentioned I love zombies? I do. I particularly love zombie alterations to stories I already know and love. I'm reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies right now and having a very good time! I'm thinking about requesting P&P&Z for Yuletide, only with the characters from Sense and Sensibility instead, because I think Marianne Dashwood dealing with zombies would be hilarious. (Also on the Yuletide list: Fringe fic set in the noir!AU episode universe :D)

Along the same lines, this Leverage fanwork website is so much fun. It's meant to be co-read with an [livejournal.com profile] apocalyptothon fic, Survival By Eliot; the website is basically the website Hardison would design for the Leverage gang's zombie-fighting endeavors in the case of a zombie apocalypse, and the fic is a narrative counterpart. Hardison's footnotes are HILARIOUS, and make sure to read the alt text for the links, too. SO GOOD. Creative fanwork, con artists, AND zombies, hooray!

When I start reading things like this, I inevitably start thinking of other fandoms + zombies, usually starting with the most recent.

cut for lengthy speculation on Hikaru no Go, The Mentalist, Generation Kill, Criminal Minds, Life, Castle, Lord Peter, Burn Notice, Sherlock Holmes, Jeeves & Wooster, and The Middleman -- all WITH ZOMBIES! )

ETA: Band of Brothers and 30 Rock )

Come tell me your own thoughts re: the above or your own favorite "X Fandom – WITH ZOMBIES!" scenarios in the comments. I would most sincerely like to hear them!

In conclusion: ZOMBIES.

1. Jeeves & Wooster recs: Mr. Wooster and the Restorative Preparation is possibly my favorite thing I've read in the fandom so far. (Okay, or maybe this. Or this. Or – ANYWAY.) Set pre-canon, it's written in a lovely Jeeves-POV and tells the story of just how Jeeves came to work for one Bertram Wooster. Because you just know that Jeeves wouldn't leave something like his employment up to chance, would he? It's clever and touching and brilliantly Jeevesian, and I keep re-reading it. ♥

1a. The author of the above story, [livejournal.com profile] innocentsmith, also has a great essay on Jeeves characterization, Gentleman's Gentlemanly Behavior. It makes me want to just point and go "Yes, THIS."

2. Moving on to Castle, the Ryan Report (aka that thing on their website where the writers do an in-character blog from Ryan's POV) for 2.21 "Den of Thieves" is SO CUTE. SO PARTNERY. SO AWESOME. If you ship Ryan/Esposito, it's golden; if you prefer the platonic interpretation, it's also golden. I love them so much, you guys. *draws hearts*

3. I have a new favorite proverb: Se non è vero, è ben trovato. It's Italian for "If it's not true, it's a good story." Isn't that lovely? (Proverb acquisition thanks to – who else – Stephen Fry on QI.)

4. BEST. GRAFITTI. EVER. One more reason to love Chicago! ♥

5. A Gadget Too Far: interesting essay on the judicious use of technology in stories. It focuses on sci-fi in novels/short prose, but the ideas are easily applicable elsewhere.

Best discussion section for this class that I've had all semester! Instead of having someone regurgitate the week's readings while everyone else nods off, our TA brought in a guy she knows who's involved with new media production. I wasn't expecting much, but it was actually really fascinating -- the way he was describing the concept behind new media was basically presenting it not as a base effort to earn money that cheapens the film, piggybacking off its success (as many of the artiste filmmakers in the class clearly thought), but as a way of telling more stories, of expanding the world of the story.

I ramble on about new media and engagement and storytelling )

Anyway. Wow. I hope that made sense. I've been having some wicked insomnia, so I kinda didn't sleep last night.

The point of all this is, now I'm curious what some of the new media things you all have come across that really did it for you. I've already mentioned the Castle stuff, but one of my very favorites is Burn Notice's Ask A Spy videolets. So clever! So fun! And I always end up wandering around the site or watching an episode or trying to figure out when the season kicks off again, too, so it's effective like that. Another recent favorite is the Sesame Street twitter account, which is awesome, because it's Muppets! Tweeting! It's delightful.

So, what's something fun you've come across recently? Come, bring me your new media favorites...

It kinda makes me sad there's no new episode tonight, because I could really go for something fluffy right now.

But that's okay! Because [livejournal.com profile] etben linked to "The Ryan Report", and it's HILARIOUS. It's basically one of those character-blogs, as done by Detective Ryan on Castle (who, btw, often reminds me of a blue-eyed, modern New York version of Ezra Standish, but I think I may be alone on this).

Anyway, there are some gems in here, people:

- "I guess I was a little too focused on other things… like speculative science fiction and girls. Yes, I know, those two things do NOT usually go together. That's what I spent my teenage years figuring out."

WAIT, THERE'S MORE )

Okay, I need to stop quoting before I quote ALL of it. Go read it yourself! There's an entire geeky post about historical con men! *draws hearts*

Dear Castle,

I've grown very fond of you [the show] since I started watching yesterday -- fond enough that I've made it through 10 episodes instead of doing my homework. I kinda ship Castle/Beckett, his family interaction is adorable, and Nathan Fillion is boatloads of crazy fun.

But I am sorry -- New York's Chinatown looks absolutely nothing like that. The streets aren't even as wide as that alleyway, and in no place are there temples with elaborate roofs, nor paper lanterns criss-crossing a street with no traffic except a lonely man with a push-broom. I'm sorry, just...no. Shooting in LA does not excuse blatant wrongness.

I would be throwing things at the screen if it weren't my own laptop.

Sincerely,
Lindsey

P.S. Oh god I've turned into one of those people, haven't I?
