This is what happens when I start catching up on Hawaii Five-0, Castle, and Lie To Me all at the same time, and start thinking about how endearing all their prominent father-daughter relationships are.

Seriously, what is it about Hawaii Five-0? It makes my sister's brain take that "When I say 'Book 'em, Danno,' I mean it as a term of endearment" conversation and come up with this (and my current icon *points*). And then it makes my brain come up with this shit:

"I first returned to Honolulu on the trail of the killers of my father, and for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, I have remained, attached to the HPD as head of a gubernatorial taskforce."

I can also far too easily imagine them having conversations like these, or the "Come on, Fraser, just tell me the truth. Just say, I'm going to endanger your life, Ray, my friend, I'm going to endanger your life in a wildly bizarre way," or the "Do you find me attractive?" bit, or basically any of the vast majority of conversations that Fraser has with either Ray (except the ones about obeying the law, ha). Or the cross-dressing. And they already have the punching scene out of the way. And I would not put it past Steve to lick things, is all I'm saying, nor would I put it past Danny to exclaim loudly about said licking. (uh...WHOOPS LOL *is twelve*)

So basically:

Dear Due South Fans,

You will probably like Steve McGarrett and Danny Williams on Hawaii Five-0, even though their jokes are about pineapples and swimming rather than pemmican and dog-sledding. They also have Kono and Chin, so even though there are no ghosts or magical realism (aside from the fact that Steve hasn't managed to get himself killed yet), it's not like they're falling short.

I highly recommend watching this show! *thumbs up*

Love, Lindsey

P.S. If I took a poll of people who have liked both shows, I bet you would find some overlap. OH WAIT. I can take a poll! Here we go:

Urgh.

My day: coughing, feeling like there's a person sitting on my chest, getting surprise requests that I bring in a doctor's note for missing work, when I haven't actually seen a doctor, thinking that the hacking and snot were self-evident enough reason not to work in food service. I also ended up defaulting on Yuletide, because my headful of cotton stuffing &tc. means my pride is not a good enough excuse for my recipient not getting a good story. *sigh* I still feel like a failure, though. And I really don't even want to talk about the surprise bad news re: my aunt, because I just can't. Let's focus on the petty and superficial instead, shall we?

Anyway, so of course now is when I get hit with all kinds of ideas for writing a Sherlock BBC story vague spoilers for the miniseries and the original book series, and a VERY SERIOUS poll )

1. I went on a massive Fringe-meta streak a few days ago (mostly here), enabled nicely by [livejournal.com profile] ignipes, who kept saying interesting things to spark me off. She then wrote a great post about Olivia Dunham which I recommend to anyone who was/is reluctant to watch Fringe based on their first impressions of her or things they heard other people saying back when it started (or interested in Olivia, or in female characterization on TV, or whatever). I was a little uncertain about Olivia when I started watching, too – so you can trust me when I say that I am REALLY HAPPY I got over that with some more watching. *nudges everyone in the direction of the pilot*

2. Isn't it disconcerting when you run across something and don't remember anything about it or where it came from? It's a bit similar to the feeling I get when going through old journal entries and thinking "Gosh, that's rather clever, but I don't remember saying it at all..." The case in point today are some old bookmarks linking to pictures of two thousand-year-old papyrus fragments with bits of The Odyssey written on (from Books 9 and 11, Book 11, and Book 17). I thought it might be from one of my classics courses, but the date says they're from the winter after sophomore year when I was withdrawn from school. My best guess now is that maybe a classics geek from my flist linked to them... They ARE pretty cool. They remind me of a school field trip to see the Dead Sea Scrolls, when I spent so long wandering through the exhibit that they had to send someone back in to find me because the buses were leaving. :D

3. Speaking of nostalgia, I would like to link (again) to this poll, which takes the cake as My Favorite Poll Ever, Fullstop. It makes me laugh and laugh and laugh. Go on, click on it; you won't regret it. :D

4. Oh, hey, did you guys notice that Lie To Me started again on Monday? SO EXCITED! Tim Roth was all terrible posture and intensity, Jason Dohring (aka Logan Echolls on Veronica Mars) guest-starred as a psychopath, and Brendan Hines and Monica Raymund spent the entire episode looking foxy in spite of Loker's terrible shirt (which he made fun of himself, oh, Loker). ♥

It's really easy for me to judge my own focus level, sometimes. I generally end up cleaning my room, which is some kind of subconscious acknowledgement of the non-focus and an attempt to streamline distractions. It works out pretty well, because cleaning is one of those things where you kinda pick at different parts of the problem until the whole thing gradually progresses. So it's not as much a problem when I'm folding clothes and then suddenly decide I need to open the window and then wander into the other room to get the vacuum and then end up straightening a stack of books instead...you get the idea.

(I also go on long tangents. In case that wasn't evident.)

Anyway. I currently have about 40 tabs open. About 10 of these are Life-inspired (research on solitary confinement in US prisons, etc); a half-dozen about Dorothy Sayers (I'm in the middle of writing a post on her essay on feminism from 1938, which is brilliant); another half-dozen plus that are something to do with Sherlock Holmes and/or Victorian England; and the rest about film stuff. And I keep flitting between tabs, so they're all about halfway-read/dealt with, so I just keep opening more tabs and not closing any that are already up.

I'm sure this is as interesting to everyone else as it is to me...

I have things I could say about last night's SPN, but I'm still neck-deep in that stupid shot breakdown, so instead, a Very Important Poll -- coincidentally also having to do with shots, but the different, more fun kind.

you see, I'm torn )

I was just thinking about this. Satisfy my curiosity?

I just realized I never shared my own answers to yesterday's poll. They would be: 1) Yes, I have been in therapy (currently am, in fact); 2) Yes, I do like it (although I'm currently a bit frustrated with my therapist); and I'm checking ALL the boxes because, where's the Dr. Caligari love? ), and adding the really awful couples therapist from The First Wives Club. :)

For another bit of random, have some Shakespeare. I've always liked this exchange from As You Like It:

Touchstone: Mistress, you must come away to your father.
Celia: Were you made the messenger?
T: No, by mine honour, but I was bid to come for you.
Rosalind: Where learned you that oath, fool?
T: Of a certain knight that swore by his honour they were good pancakes and swore by his honour the mustard was naught: now I'll stand to it, the pancakes were naught and the mustard was good, and yet was not the knight forsworn.
C: How prove you that, in the great heap of your knowledge?
R: Ay, marry, now unmuzzle your wisdom.
T: Stand you both forth now: stroke your chins, and swear by your beards that I am a knave.
C: By our beards, if we had them, thou art.
T: By my knavery, if I had it, then I were; but if you swear by that that is not, you are not forsworn: no more was this knight swearing by his honour, for he never had any; or if he had, he had sworn it away before ever he saw those pancakes or that mustard.

As I mentioned, I've been watching In Treatment. It has me thinking about therapy, so have a poll! I hope these questions aren't too personal.
