HEE. I am really unholy amounts of amused by the titles of the songs on the Mission Impossible 4 soundtrack, because it is full of horrible jokes and wordplay. A selection of the track listing, for your enjoyment:

1 Give Her My Budapest
3 Knife To A Gun Fight
4 In Russia, Phone Dials You
5 Kremlin With Anticipation
6 From Russia With Shove
10 Man, a Plan, a Code, Dubai
11 Love the Glove
12 Express Elevator
13 Mission Impersonatable
14 Moreau Trouble Than She's Worth
15 Out For a Run
16 Eye of the Wistrom
17 Mood India
18 Mumbai's the Word
19 Launch is On Hendricks
20 World's Worst Parking Valet
21 Putting the Miss In Mission

It's even funnier if you've seen the movie, and know which scenes they refer to. :)

...hi, welcome to my brain right now. It has apparently decided to get obsessed with spy things again, and has been (a) re-reading (and compulsively editing) my senior thesis on science fiction in spy films/TV, (b) going to seen M:I4 four times in theaters, (c) watching all the rest of the Mission: Impossible movies possibly also multiple times, I admit nothing (d) watching the old Mission: Impossible TV show (which I have discovered is enormous amounts of fun, and not dated much at all, because the screenwriters were apparently fellow fans of David Maurer's The Big Con, and the characters basically pull off an awesome con job/heist every episode), (e) thinking about buying soundtracks for various spy films on Amazon, and (f) adding any spy films that weren't already on my Netflix queue to my Netflix queue -- at least, as many as I can fit before it hits 500 again, which is sadly only about 15 more, and (g) trying to telepathically make someone write good Ethan/Brandt fic.

I am also writing up my thoughts on the Mission: Impossible films, and trying to resist the urge to edit my thesis into something the internet might read and I might not be ashamed of, and posting it. Because no one wants to read that, I don't think, whereas I am a giant nerd who is barely resisting telling you all the origin of the quote in the subject line.

1) Discover the #1 single in your country of origin in the week you were born.
2) Find it on YouTube.
3) Post it on your LJ/DW page without shame. Or for some of you, with shame.

Half-performance video, half-backstage-documentary; surprisingly full of pyrotechnics and people flying around stage in wire harnesses; less surprisingly full of outrageous hair -- I present the video for Bon Jovi's eternal "Livin' On A Prayer," which had four straight weeks at #1, a streak which ended a few days after my birthday in March of 1987: Livin' On A Prayer

While discussing why I'm sure my interview went fine and people will want to hire me, really:

Me: *blah blah nunchuck skills* ...and I have a great smile. Surely that helps.
Katie: And you have a smashing set of tits!
Me: ...um. Thanks?
K: ...I was listening to "The USS Make Shit Up" earlier! Don't look at me like that!

And then she proceeded to play it for me, because she is a horrible person who never shared this bit of Star Trek hilarity with me. But I am not a horrible person! And so I share with you all: The USS Make Shit Up by Voltaire

Hee.

- So I just realized that I never posted the results for the unguessed pairings in the quotations ship meme a couple of weeks ago. I've now updated the post with the answers -- no one guessed Miss Parker/Jarod (The Pretender), Josh Lyman/Donna Moss (The West Wing), Olivia Dunham/Peter Bishop (Fringe), Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), or Steve McGarrett/Danny Williams (Hawaii Five-0). For shame on the last one, people. The rest I kind of expected -- serves me right for being ridiculously multifannish. The pairings that were guessed were Brad Colbert/Nate Fick (Generation Kill), Bertie Wooster/Reginald Jeeves (Jeeves & Wooster), John Watson/Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes books), Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane (Lord Peter Wimsey series), and Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski (Due South).

- I have started compulsively watching QI again. Why is Stephen Fry so awesome, seriously? I just want to be his friend, give him a hug, and sit around drinking tea and/or madeira while talking about obscure trivia. (SIGH why am I not Emma Thompson)

- Question: does anyone know where I might *ahem* look for video editing programs, with, say, an eye patch on, if you know what I mean? I've been really wanting to make some vids, but fuck if I'm going to do it with Windows Movie Maker again.

- In other, unrelated news, I can't stop listening to Janelle Monáe's song "Cold War". I'm not sure why. It's awesome. :)

Dear Yuletide Writer,

I am very sorry, but I don't have a letter for you just yet! It's been a crazy week. Stay tuned to this space, though -- a letter is imminent. Thank you!

Love,
Lindsey

Dear Everyone Else,

This weekend has been amazing and exhausting! My mom's 60th-plus-awesome-promotion party was yesterday, plus another party after that, and tonight, I just got back from the Dresden Dolls' last show of tour with [livejournal.com profile] duia. They did TWO ENCORES and played for almost three and a half hours! OMG SO EXHAUSTED BUT HAPPY.

:DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Love and kisses,
Lindsey

So many of those lyrics are really really easy to guess. I think my favorite bit is the first part of the first one, because it sounds like it was written on a lot of incredibly strong drugs. :)

I'm not really someone who likes to watch MTV, nor do I listen to much pop music, so I generally don't see many music videos. When I do, it's usually because I hear that someone's done something visually interesting, in which case, as a film person, I'll check it out.

That said, I REALLY WISH someone had told me that the first couple of minutes of Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" music video involved her making out and speaking Swedish with a suspender-wearing Alexander Skarsgård.

I would've watched it much sooner. :D

(also, confession time: I am actually really really fond of Lady Gaga. :D?)

Okay, how is it possible that NO ONE ON MY FLIST managed to tell me that Greta Salpeter had a song up from her solo project?

I had to find out because [livejournal.com profile] arielchan and [livejournal.com profile] junebug_waltz were excited about Gold Motel playing with Empires, and I went "Who's Gold Motel?" and Googled it.

GRETA FUCKIN' SALPETER, THAT'S WHO.

You're all on notice. *glares*

That said, I really like the demo version. I noticed on Goodbye Blues that a few of the tracks had a kind of Motown vibe (an impression reinforced when they played Martha & the Vandellas' "Heat Wave" during soundcheck); this gave me the same feeling. I personally love that -- our mom raised us on Motown and other 50s/60s oldies music, so there's something very familiar about it, in addition to being catchy as hell. And then you mix in Greta's lovely voice, and her always-slightly-eerie lyrics, and I'm left going ALBUM NOW, PLZ.

:D

I've been thinking about it, and I have to say, casting Elsa Lanchester (who played the Bride of Frankenstein) as a mad scientist in Man From U.N.C.L.E. (1.23 "The Brain-Killer Affair") was kind of an awesome move, and maybe the best stunt-casting I've seen -- although if you have other contenders, feel free to pitch them. :) They even made a nod to it with her hairstyle, with those distinct wavy white streaks on the side. I am picturing them giggling to themselves at their own cleverness (hey, it's what I would do).

Well played, show. Well played. :)

Unrelatedly, you know what I love? 'A Kiss To Build A Dream On' by Louis Armstrong. I haven't listened to it in a while (and in fact seem to have lost it from my hard drive -- Katie, can you email me a copy?), but it was like meeting a good old friend.

***

On another unrelated topic, I've been thinking a lot about what New York must have been like in the 1960s. This is what happens when you alternate watching Mad Men and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. episodes. I mean, aside from contemplating/writing Mad Men/MFU crossovers, but I already did that. :)

***

And in a final shallow note...don't get me wrong, I love Natalie Morales and I'm enjoying White Collar, but...does anyone else think that her new hairstyle was a terrible, terrible mistake? I mean, really.
inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (crossroadghost)
So, I'm in New York! I went out to dinner with a friend and then spent like, two hours talking with her about her screenplay that I edited on the plane ride. (I also worked on Man From U.N.C.L.E. fic, almost finished my book, and occasionally stared at Robert Downey Jr without sound on the in-flight movie. It was a very productive trip.) Unfortunately, that means I didn't quite make storage unit hours of operation, which leaves my fan very usefully in a locked room several blocks away. Along with my sheets. And pillow. And ice trays. There's no A/C in this dorm room, it's humid, and my damn laptop runs hot.

Luckily, this SPN S5 promo is giving me chills (oh, you see what I did there...) But seriously, all y'all (*fingerguns at [livejournal.com profile] serialkarma*) should go watch that, like, NOW.

For those of you who aren't SPN fans, or don't want spoilers, you get to download this song file.

Because while I am excited about the teasing little glimpses of S5 (OMG MAKE IT THURSDAY ALREADY), the song is making me very very happy and geeky )

Which brings me back to my point! Which is that one of my favorite songs on the soundtrack is Ralph Stanley's a capella version of "O Death". I used to skip the track when I listened to the album, because it really gets to me. The lyrics are truly eerie, and his voice is haunting. He's got that waver to his voice that old men get; you listen and feel as if death really has come for him, and he's begging for his life without much hope. It's a brilliant performance -- just his voice, no instrumentation, not even clapping, but you don't notice any lack.

But I love the cover of "O Death" on that SPN promo LOTS. It's very appropriate for the material, but it's an excellent interpretation of the traditional song in its own right. The lyrics she picked out focus more on the conceptual threads in the song, which is interesting. And the lyrics she added at the end make for a nice creepy punch. :D

A copy of Ralph Stanley's version from the OBWAT soundtrack

A link to Jen Titus' version, again

And just for the heck of it, have a bonus song! That's the McIntosh County Shouters doing "Sign of the Judgement," an old ring shout. I kinda want to vid SPN to it, but it also gives me chills, and always has. It seems counterintuitive, but I find old music far more apocalyptic than something like Metallica...

and now, let's talk about the actual content of the promo. Promo-spoilers for SPN S5 )

Is that really "Check Yes Juliet" by We The Kings on the roller derby episode of Psych? Really?

...you know they just did it for the name. :)

So...I have this project due for my Basic Drawing class. I had an idea, but I was struggling with certain things about it and becoming less and less enamored with the whole thing. And then I talked to my teacher, who is a nice guy but a little kooky, and he got me to abandon the whole first idea to go with something COMPLETELY different and a lot more stressful because it involves less prep work. Then I compounded matters by not working on it all weekend. Last night, I kept putting off going over to the art studio (where I keep my Giant Piece O' Paper, about 5ft.x6ft.) until around 3:45am. I then spent an hour just staring at the GPO'P I'd tacked to the wall, drinking tea (because I brought my HotPot to boil water and teabags and sugar, I'm crazy, okay?) and trying to picture the fucking thing I was about to start. Blank. Giant. Paper. It's terrifying.

When I finally had the general idea in my head, I started. Of course, the first thing I did was screw up the face, so now there's these big erased charcoal lines all over that area, which anyone who has worked with charcoal knows means that there's just big smudges. And I'm not happy with it at the moment, and I'm exhausted and in a weird headspace because I stayed up until about 8am working and slept most of today, and I'll have to do the same thing tonight after my film class ends at 9:30pm. ARGH.

Also, I have to miss the swing club's expedition to go blues dancing at The Cotton Club, which makes me angry for two reasons: 1) I haven't been blues dancing in ages and it's one of my favorite things ever, and 2) it's the fuckin' Cotton Club. *sigh* I even uploaded all my blues music for y'all to help get myself in the mood, and now I can't go.

Here's the music anyway )

Alright, I'm off to check my mail, go to film class, and work my little tushie off on a giant drawing that's due tomorrow. Enjoy the blues!
