inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (cherproject)

So...I have this project due for my Basic Drawing class. I had an idea, but I was struggling with certain things about it and becoming less and less enamored with the whole thing. And then I talked to my teacher, who is a nice guy but a little kooky, and he got me to abandon the whole first idea to go with something COMPLETELY different and a lot more stressful because it involves less prep work. Then I compounded matters by not working on it all weekend. Last night, I kept putting off going over to the art studio (where I keep my Giant Piece O' Paper, about 5ft.x6ft.) until around 3:45am. I then spent an hour just staring at the GPO'P I'd tacked to the wall, drinking tea (because I brought my HotPot to boil water and teabags and sugar, I'm crazy, okay?) and trying to picture the fucking thing I was about to start. Blank. Giant. Paper. It's terrifying.

When I finally had the general idea in my head, I started. Of course, the first thing I did was screw up the face, so now there's these big erased charcoal lines all over that area, which anyone who has worked with charcoal knows means that there's just big smudges. And I'm not happy with it at the moment, and I'm exhausted and in a weird headspace because I stayed up until about 8am working and slept most of today, and I'll have to do the same thing tonight after my film class ends at 9:30pm. ARGH.

Also, I have to miss the swing club's expedition to go blues dancing at The Cotton Club, which makes me angry for two reasons: 1) I haven't been blues dancing in ages and it's one of my favorite things ever, and 2) it's the fuckin' Cotton Club. *sigh* I even uploaded all my blues music for y'all to help get myself in the mood, and now I can't go.

Here's the music anyway. There's a bit of variety, from Delta blues to electric blues to blues-rock. Some of these are just one or two discs of a set, because I got them off my teacher. Two of the albums are not entirely blues--the Music & Revolution CD, which is the mix my teacher made for the elective I took in high school on the history of popular music in America and has everything from early jazz to Delta blues to spirituals, stomps, soul and folk; and the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, which is more along the lines of folk and bluegrass, but I love the cover of "Hard Time Killing Floor Blues" on it a lot. Also, it's just an amazing bit of tribute to early American music. I could continue here and geek out about Alan Lomax and other things, but I shall refrain. Oh! And for you SPN fans, let me just say that I will be highly disappointed if they don't play Robert Johnson's "Cross Road Blues" (which you will find on the Music & Revolution CD) this Thursday. I'm just sayin'. I could also continue here about why I'm so thrilled about the way they're tying things into American folklore once again, AND referencing a legendary figure like Robert Johnson, but I really don't have the time.
