Yuletide recs and whatnot

So I just realized I never posted about Yuletide stuff! Which is terrible of me; bad Lindsey, no cookie.
My gift was the utterly awesome Black Shuck, written for Neil Gaiman's A Study In Emerald. My author (WHO I LOVE) wrote a retelling of The Hound of the Baskervilles, and it's just completely wonderful -- it just nails the pastiche-but-not-quite-the-same-world writing and this version of Holmes and Watson, while also managing to be a thrilling adventure and a truly creepy horror story. I am so, so, so delighted by it, and you should all go read it immediately! Um, unless you're planning to go to sleep right afterward, in which case you might want to wait until it's light outside. :D?
I've been reading my way through the fics in a very random manner, but have some recs anyway.
Crumbs in the Butter (Alice (2009))
Summary: Alice and Hatter attend Jack and Duchess's wedding, and run into a few...small problems.
Heeee. I love this! Alice and Hatter are adorable, and there's some actual plot! I had lots of fun reading this, and you should all go have fun now, too. *nods*
Written Between The Lines (Banlieue 13)
Summary: After the buildings fell, the real work began.
One of my favorite things from Yuletide this year was TWO NEW B13 FICS YAAAAAAAY! This one is my favorite of the two, and I'm so glad
etben got this for her gift, since she's the one who got me into the fandom in the first place. It felt almost like a gift for me, too, since
etben and I have had many long email exchanges about things like Leito wanting to build public libraries and the socioeconomipoliticaletc situation in B13 and whatnot, so this was just delightful for me. And! It's Tao-POV! Which is just awesome, in Tao's laidback-awesome way, and it's really kind of sweet when they're all not kicking bad guys in the head. Basically: :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Sleeping Arrangements (Banlieue 13)
Summary: With his place bombed to nothing, Leïto (and Lola) have to sleep somewhere. Damien offers his apartment. (post-Ultimatum)
I'm normally all about getting my 'ships together, but I kind of love that the author of this leaves it at UST in this slice-of-life piece set after the second movie. It's quiet and self-aware and lovely and full of delicious tension, and I really like Damien's POV in it.
This kid I once knew (Calvin & Hobbes)
Summary: Daniel sends their whole improv group an e-mail saying "check this out its fun1!1" and a link to a web comic called The Adventures of Spaceman Spiff.
Susie! I love Susie! And I love the idea of Calvin doing a web comic of Spaceman Spiff; it's just so him. Susie's reactions to finding herself the subject of some of the strips are really lovely.
The Roommate of +10 Confusion (Calvin & Hobbes/Foxtrot)
Summary: There must be some scientifically sound way for Jason Fox to be able to quantify his new college roommate, but he hasn't found one yet that fits. Especially when he factors in the stuffed tiger.
Calvin and Jason Fox (and Hobbes!) as freshman roommates? BWAHAHAHAHAA. Okay, whatever crazy shenanigans you're imagining? It's EVENWORSE BETTER. This is really delightfully fun, guys.
Down the Shore Everything's All Right (Hawaii Five-0)
Summary: There's a better than average chance that Danny is getting crazier by association -- and he wouldn't change it for the world (although he could do without the head injuries, thanks).
H50 hurt/comfort, yay! The banter in this is just excellent, and Steve is crazy-pants, and basically it's wonderful. ♥
Break The Lock If It Don't Fit (or, Two Members of Five-O Conduct an Experiment in Domesticity) (Hawaii Five-0)
Summary: Going from partners to roommates seems like the most natural step for Steve and Danny to take - but it doesn't come without some complications.
This is pretty much what it says in the summary, and it's adorable. I mean, there's really no other word for it. Also, tie-pulling! I love me some tie-pulling. :D
The Care and Feeding of Your M (James Bond)
Summary: (an incomplete list, in the process of being compiled by Miss Jane Moneypenny)
Moneypenny! And M! This is pretty much what it says on the label, and wonderfully full of Moneypenny being quietly awesome and competent, and no James Bond in sight. ♥!
Peter and the Power of Suggestion (Lord Peter Wimsey - Dorothy L. Sayers)
Summary: For once, Lord Peter Wimsey is at a loss. What on earth can a man buy his wife for Christmas that costs under a guinea? Harriet also has a one guinea budget for Peter's present, but she has had the good sense to ask for assistance from Miss Climpson. (And sometimes the best presents are the ones you make yourself.)
AWWWW YAY SAPPY LORD PETER CHRISTMAS FIC. Peter and Harriet are adorable in this, and Miss Climpson and Bunter pwn EVERYONE. :D
Meta Yuletide Fic (The Fic You Wish Your Fic Smelled Like) (Old Spice Guy)
Summary: Why hello, Yuletide reader. Why don't you sit down for a bit? Get comfortable, because when you click my link you will be reading a work of such magnificence that you won't be able to look away, even if a crew of zombies breaks through your window and bites your neck.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA. I'm sorry, I don't really have anything to add. If that title + summary doesn't get you interested, there's just no helping you. :D
Lieutenant Bennet's Visit (Temeraire - Naomi Novik / Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen)
Summary: Elizabeth’s reality is far different from her sisters’.
This fic is such a fun idea -- Elizabeth Bennet! Riding dragons! SOLD -- and I enjoyed the hell out of it. (Although, I think I'm more OTP about her and Darcy than I thought, because this is gen, and that made me rather sad. Missed connections kick me right in the gut.)
The Barkosigan Saga: Mirror Dog (Wishbone/Vorkosigan Saga)
Summary: In a lost Wishbone episode, Emily 'borrows' one of David's inventions while he's sick in bed; Wishbone is reminded of the life lessons about sibling relationships represented by Miles and Mark Vorkosigan.
Yes, you are reading those fandoms right. If you grew up on both Wishbone and the Vorkosigan books like I did, this is pretty much guaranteed to make you die laughing. Katie and I were cracking up for about five minutes from the summary and prompt alone, and then proceeded to laugh ourselves into a painful state of breathless delight the entire way through reading, and then continued laughing for ages afterward. It's horrifyingly brilliant -- it's basically a Wishbone episode transcript, complete with commercial breaks and mid-90's actors and the ear-worming theme song, and everything is just perfect. Wishbone-does-Mirror-Dance also means turning one of Bujold's darkest books into G-rated kids' show fare, and that process is hilarious OMG. In short: YOU MUST READ THIS, IT'S AMAZING. God, I love the cracktastic stuff that comes out of Yuletide.
I feel vaguely guilty for having the deathplague and defaulting rather than risking a crappy fic for my recipient, but them's the breaks, I guess. I tried to make up for it by beta-ing like a mofo (up till 3am two nights in a row with my sister, what what), but I may also have to do a NYR, too...
