Hello all! I am back from my lovely vacation (well, it was my mom's vacation; I'm not working regularly enough to really feel justified in calling it my vacation).

Things Done (in brief):

1. Drove from Texas to Georgia and back in a week.
2. Visited my older sister! YAY. ♥ (Also, there were some friends of hers, and a boyfriend or something. I guess they were okay. ;D) I miss her. It is nearly impossible to talk to her, what with the medical student thing and the 'my house is a black hole of cell phone reception' thing. We cleverly timed our visit for her once-a-month free time.
3. Ate a LOT of good food: Southern cooking, BBQ, fresh outdoor-festival corndogs, ordered-for-us-by-the-waiter Bangladeshi food (seriously, it was very cool; he just told us what he thought we should have, and we nodded, and it was magically delicious), crab, oysters, more oysters, beignets and Cafe du Monde coffee, perfect steak, etc, etc.
[The eating comprised a lot of this trip. My family are food tourists.]
4. Corollary to the food: drinking! Everything from sisterly margaritas drunk in perfect spring weather, to beer at the beach (and in a park, and with BBQ), to, well, New Orleans, where I don't think I drank the same thing more than twice and often did so while sitting on balconies in the French Quarter, where people stare at you in envy from the streets below. :D I managed to bear up fairly well under Mom rolling her eyes while I geeked about mixology and just why things like a Sazerac are cool...
5. Visited the [livejournal.com profile] floridapeaches in her natural habitat! *snuggles* We ate seafood and hung out at the beach, went salsa dancing, I met the fiance (*double thumbs up*), and she studied for her two exams the next day in the bar. :D
6. Did I mention New Orleans? Yeah.
7. Acquired fun new material possessions:
a) WORLD'S BEST RING. It's from Vietnam! My sister gave it to me! It's SHINY! I plan to wear it on Sunday when [livejournal.com profile] arielchan and I dress up and drink fancy cocktails. :D
b) Some matching piratical/cartography geek jewelry for me and the Twin.
c) A big hat! It's very Southern. And there's a big bow. I LOVE IT SO.
d) Aviator sunglasses! Who says you can't get anything good in a gas station. They were a desperation purchase (I forgot mine, and YOU try driving all day on a cloudless day in the South without them), but I like them a lot.

Geekery Update:

8) I mostly refrained from being a dorkus giganticus on the trip, but I spent a lot of time reading Jeeves and Wooster in the car, giggling madly, and trying to explain to my mom that I am really not crazy. (I ended up just reading aloud by the end of the trip.) There was also an embarrassing incident where we went out to dinner and I was two pages from the end of the short story collection Carry On, Jeeves (the last story of which is "Bertie Changes His Mind," the only story in canon narrated by Jeeves and therefore fascinating and frightfully clever) by the time we reached the restaurant, which resulted in me standing in the bar juggling my beer and my library book, trying to finish the pages while my mother, sister, and sister's boyfriend laughed at me. Not that I didn't deserve it. :)

Also a source of mad giggling: QI, the British quiz show that Stephen Fry hosts. It hits my love of trivia SO HARD and is absolutely hilarious. I really love that they don't have to be right, just interesting; it's about the joy and fun of new information, and I just adore that. I am also vastly entertained (read: laugh like a shocked drain) every time Stephen Fry says something inappropriate/dirty/scandalous/suggestive, because I never expect it from him, even though I should.

Here, have a YouTube playlist of the entire series. *pimps*

Hurrah! Sounds brilliant! :D The magically delicious ordered-for-you food is absolutely the best kind!

Also, dressing up and having cocktails sounds pretty brilliant (must admit, I don't usually bother to dress up!).

I am SO GLAD you came my way, bb. It had been far, far too long.

Also, just watched the first ep of QI, and IT IS SO FUNNY. <3_<3 I had forgotten how much I love Stephen Fry. :)

Staying with Emma in Hotlanta is always a good idea. Did you go to that amazing pastry place while you were there? The one with 8 million flavors of pie/cake?

I'm about to embark on a deadly and mysterious adventure in Israel. I hope my trip is as fun as yours. Let me know if you want me to stick anything in the Western Wall for you.
