inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (dsraykduty)
I caught a good chunk of Die Hard With A Vengeance (that's #3) on TV tonight, which is hands-down the worst in the series. I don't care how awesome Samuel L. Jackson is; all they give Zeus to do the entire movie is accuse John McClane of being a racist when he's obviously not, and I find that both annoying and utterly without significant emotional impact. And Jeremy Irons has got nothin' on Alan Rickman.

On the other hand, at one point John pulls a metal splinter from sliding down a cable out of his shoulder and then Zeus uses it to pick the lock on their handcuffs. That was pretty cool. :)

I was reminded that I used to work at an after-school program in the elementary school where all those bomb sequences were shot. ExpandIt's surreal when that happens. )

Also, it reminded me again that I miss New York. I just read a Mag7 New York City AU Expandthat was great but maybe not of interest to everyone ) The relevant point here is that I read it right around the same time I made this post; there was a period of a few days when I was feeling incredibly sentimental about the city, and the author of this fic has clearly lived in and loved New York. You can feel it in the little details, like the way you can turn onto one of the tiny streets in Chinatown and be suddenly deafened by the quiet, like someone threw a switch. There were all these little touches that just felt right to me, and I loved it.

Anyway, the result of all this and my enjoyment of Die Hard 4 have combined to make me write fic. I want to figure John McClane out, and write him being an everyday hero as a cop. I need to find a good book about being a NYC police officer, preferably non-fiction like an autobiography or memoirs or something along those lines. Does anyone know of a good one they can recommend? I'd appreciate it.

I also saw High Noon for the first time tonight (oh, the shame, I am a bad film student), which was awesome beyond words. Seriously, so good. I really couldn't tell you here, because every shot and tiny movement of Gary Cooper's face in that movie is pure gold, so you should just watch the movie and come back to agree with me that it's amazing.

In other news, Katie is leaving me for Connecticut very early in the morning on Friday. Emma already left for DC. I am bereft here, guys.
