inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (tvonswing)
Well, Katie and I just kicked off our movie-watching for the summer at the Paramount. Their Summer Classic Film Series is always one of the best things about summer in Austin. Tonight was a double feature of Casablanca and To Have And Have Not. I've seen the former about a half-dozen times, and it never gets old, or trite, or boring. There's too much depth and humanity in that film. It's always a pleasure to see it again, especially on the big screen and with a large audience--the audience makes me remember just how funny that movie is, especially Claude Rains, who just gets the best comedic lines.

I'd never seen To Have And Have Not before tonight, and I have to say: *wolf whistles* ("You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and...blow.") that Lauren Bacall. God damn. She lived up to my expectations of her as a Howard Hawks film femme; the women in his movies are surprisingly strong and smart and sexy for that era--well, for any era, actually *coughLoisinSupermanReturnscough*--like Lauren Bacall in To Have And Have Not or The Big Sleep, Katharine Hepburn in Bringing Up Baby, Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday, etc. She was oodles of fun and (IMHO) stole a good number of scenes out from under Humphrey Bogart (which, you know, is awesome, because--Humphrey Bogart, people). I didn't think the plot was anything out of the ordinary; it was all about Bogart and Bacall. Speaking of Bogie, the scene spoiler ) It's so much fun to see someone go convincingly from nonchalant to "I-will-kick-your-ass" in two seconds flat.

This summer's lineup looks very promising (you can see the list of films at the page linked above). My goal is to see all of them this summer. Tomorrow, Katie and I and some friends will be back again to see two Star Trek movies, The Wrath of Khan and The Voyage Home (the one with the whales). I'm quite excited.

Katie and I have managed to get ourselves on a totally backwards sleep schedule (as in, I went to sleep at 7:30 this morning and woke up at 5:30 this evening), so the plan is to pull an all-nighter and get back to normal. Wish us luck!
