inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (middleman!!!)

LOL. Okay, so I'm watching The Mentalist (short version reaction – Jane is intriguing and pretty but kind of a d-bag, but that's okay because Cho wins at EVERYTHING ♥), and I spotted this Middleman crossover in the background of 1.20 "Red Sauce":

Indeed, folks, that IS the machine for Gut Wrencher I – the video game banned in 17 countries, denounced by both Tipper Gore AND the Dalai Lama, last seen in the Batter of the Bulge Pancake House (a bunker of maple syrup and mortar fire known for its luftwaffles and panzer cakes) when Wendy and Tyler play it on their third date in 1.09 "The Obsolescent Cryogenic Meltdown," thereby sweeping Wendy off her feet and leading to lots of hot sex. :D

I am not surprised, since they're both ABC Family productions, but I was SO THRILLED to see it again! *clutches Middleman DVDs*

(The really important question is, does this plus the throwaway reference to a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster in "The Clotharian Contamination Protocol" thus connect The Mentalist and The Middleman to the Hitchhiker's Guide universe, and thus to Doctor Who, and thus to the Tommy Westphall Multiverse [also here]? I THINK IT SHOULD. Oh my god I am such a nerd...)

For starters, he is the only person in the world I have ever been attracted to while they're wearing a short-sleeved button-up. I don't know how that's even possible, but there you are. And that's not even mentioning his interrogations. *chinhands/hearteyes*

And there's a whole season left to watch, in which he will continue to be awesome! I'm psyched. (no pun intended...) :D

It is indeed a mystery! It might have something to do with the fact that while a lot of characters (and actors) try to pull off the whole deadpan snark thing, very few do it so perfectly. *happysigh*

And there's a whole season left to watch, in which he will continue to be awesome!

Including a chance to learn all about Cho's past as a wee gang member with a hilarious nickname. ♥____♥

True! He is rather impeccable. Although I have to give his magnificent upper arms (and pecs, and forearms, and wrists...) some credit for the shirt thing. :D The deadpan act also makes him brilliantly funny; the best comedy actors never acknowledge that what they've just said/done is funny. They just let people laugh. Half the time, you're hard-pressed to tell if he's really making a joke! (I'm thinking particularly of the episode where *cough* Jane takes him shopping and he becomes a GQundercoverMF and ends up sitting in a hotel room with this woman talking about her love life; his last line, no one can tell for a second if he's kidding or just being really rude. He's kidding, of course. I think.) Or when he is actually bothered by something, it's so much fun to watch, because he's so deadpan about it. Like in the witch episode, hee. (Or, you know, beating himself up about letting the guy who knew about Red John get away, yay angst!) The writers love Jane's cleverness and give him most of the best lines, but Cho totally gets all the rest, and he runs with them. ♥

In all seriousness, though, I love that he reads books on stakeouts, even if he does fold the covers around like that. Which is BIG, for me; I don't hold with book abuse, unless you're awesome, or, say, have a valid reason to need your hands free at a moment's notice. Luckily, Cho qualifies on both counts. :)

Cho's past as a wee gang member with a hilarious nickname

OMG REALLY??? I CANNOT WAIT. :DDDDDDDDDDDDDD

...clearly I need a Cho icon, stat.

I LOVE THAT SCENE SO MUCH. It makes me laugh just thinking about it. (That whole sequence of scenes does, to be honest, starting with Jane's absolute delight at how good Cho is at being a GQuncoverMF. I don't even remember the plot of the episode, but I remember all that, hee.) (Which, okay, is my experience with a lot of the show - the plots are sometimes so stupid I promptly forget them in self-defense, but the darling character moments often make up for it.)

The book thing, too. I don't know if we get a look at which books they are, but I think I remember it being Wuthering Heights in one episode, which cracks me up so much. Because of course if you're going to read while on stake-out you're going to read Wuthering Heights. WHY NOT?

IT'S SO GOOD. The way he goes about picking up those women in the bar is so hilarious, and Jane's ongoing delight is adorable. Also, Cho in GQMF sunglasses and nice clothes. SOLD! :D And yeah, I have to watch with my CSI/NCIS/Numb3rs-watching filter firmly in place, where I sort of settle down into a comfortable blah-blah-blah-procedural-plot-OMGYAYCHARACTERIZATION rhythm. (Criminal Minds this season has, sadly, had far too many episodes fall into this category, when they used to never.)

Because of course if you're going to read while on stake-out you're going to read Wuthering Heights.

LOL. I haven't managed to see any titles yet, although I suspect that he might've been reading something history-related to prompt this exchange from 1.09:

*Rigsby and Cho watch suspect from car in a stakeout-y manner* *Cho pulls out his book*
Rigsby: Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Cho: No.
R: How do you know you're not?
C: I was thinking how I wish I could go back in time and have sex with my 8th grade history teacher Miss Hufficker. Is that what you're thinking?
R: ...No. I was thinking Mitch Reese, gas station guy.
C: Whatever lights your fire, man.

With, of course, the requisite Cho non-inflection on all lines.

I feel like this would be a great fic concept. Cho is reading To Kill A Mockingbird or something, and keeps being interrupted by inane/bored comments from Rigsby/Van Pelt and/or Jane. Andthentheyarrestpeople, preferably with wall-slamming and snark. :D?

GOOD LORD YES. Sign me up for some crime fighting shenanigans, please.

*dies*

Ahahaha, yes, the Don't Think About It Too Much filter for television enjoyment. I've got one of those too. I don't mind using it, really, as long as I'm entertained and there's enough I like to keep me interested.

(We shall not speak of the disappointment that is Criminal Minds this season. If they don't get back on track next season I will cry. FOR REAL.)

Andthentheyarrestpeople, preferably with wall-slamming and snark.

I would read it. *nods*

I was SO PLEASED when I saw it! I just wonder if they did it on purpose, or if it was a deliberate shout-out. :)
