inmyriadbits: oranges on blue (happynakedmen)
Oh, I love that play.

I just went to see the Columbia King's Crown Shakespeare Troupe's outdoor performance of Much Ado About Nothing, which is just SO much fun. Beatrice & Benedick are probably my favorite Shakespearean couple; they do banter like nobody else, and they're just so darn cute! This production was a lot of fun--almost every scene change, we moved with the actors to a different part of the Columbia campus. Most of the scenes were in Low Plaza, but everything from the scene when Benedick overhears the Duke, Claudio, and Leonato loudly proclaiming that Beatrice is secretly in love with Benedick (SN fans, be with me now...) to the arrest of Borachio and Conrade was over by Furnald Hall and the Journalism building. There were these bizarre actors that were sort of gardeners/sprite with blue facepaint and watering cans that make weird noises and directed you to the next scene. I'm not explaining them well--they were actually really adorable and just absurd enough to work with the play without taking away from it--but it was a good choice, IMO. (Plus, there was a hilarious moment when Claudio is being all emo when he thinks the Duke is wooing Hero for himself, and the blue-faced characters started coming up and pouring water all over him. Props to the actor playing Claudio for keeping a straight face through that; it was genius). Every scene had a sort of secondary story to it, as the revelers provided a kind of romantic scenery. Benedick was excellent; energetic and cocky and smart-ass, but with a good amount of pathos. He was well-matched in this production's Beatrice, who was proud and witty and gave as good as she got.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun. :D Everyone, tell me your favorite line/moment from the play (if you know it)! Mine is the subject line, of course. Good night!
