2011 to 2012

1. I wrote two stories! There was the Sherlock Holmes (/Due South/Numb3rs/House/Psych/Castle) fic The Sincerest Form of Flattery back in September, and then I wrote Life fic for Yuletide: Taking The Stairs, which has received many lovely comments that stroke my ego. I also wrote a smattering of Twitterfic in February for a whole bunch of fandoms.
Speaking of Yuletide, I also beta'd my sister's Life fic, Precession, which is excellent (and hilariously the only other Life fic to come out of Yuletide other than mine). I also received two gifts: In Uniform (B13) by
Val Mora, and A Madcap Proposal (Lost In Austen) by
7iris, both of which are wonderful and make me super happy.
2. Medical issues ended up consuming a lot of my energy and attention this year. In brief: many uncomfortable tests that involved people poking things into my body and/or sucking my blood away; surgery in February; taking daily medication for the past year; glasses acquisition for being nearsighted with an astigmatism; semi-broken toe; many seriously jammed fingers; continuing eczema issues; acne problems springing up for no reason I can see; various back and neck pains; something that is maybe thoracic outlet sydrome and maybe T4 syndrome or something, but basically means that I have nerve issues that make my wrist/hand hurt/feel tingly intermittently; possibly some kind of autoimmune thing, that no one is sure what it is because I had some weird test results but all my symptoms are so general that no one knows what to do next, but it may possibly rear its ugly head in the future, so I have to come back for checkups. Yay for Sword of Damocles medical issues! I also feel like I've had a lot of colds this year, more than usual. I'm not sure if that's accurate, but it feels that way.
On the bright side, I have some more idea of what's going on with my body. I've been having normal, 4-7 day periods approximately once a month. And I seem to have lost 5-10 pounds, which is hopefully due to a more active lifestyle and better eating rather than random chance.
3. The other thing that's consumed my energy is work. I got a second job in July (almost six months ago exactly, actually), and I've been saving a good deal of money. I seem to be performing pretty well at both, and I enjoy my coworkers. I guess I don't have a lot to say, here; I'm not particularly invested in either job, aside from them making me money.
Other Interesting Events From 2011:
- hung art on walls
- broken laptop replacement ordeal
- kiss and fail!dating with M
- trip to clean out uncle's MIL's old house, in the course of which I acquired several boxes of awesome kitchen stuff for free
- the insanely hot summer and drought
- typewriter!
- joined a soccer team
- broken phone replacement
- Alexi Murdoch concert in October
Goals For 2012, In No Particular Order:
- GET LAID OMG
- start up jiu jitsu again. I really enjoyed it the last time around, but I had to drop it; this was one of the things that made me decide to buckle down and figure out what was going on with my body (leading to the surgery/medication/etc. medical shenanigans listed above). Anyway, now that I am no longer chronically anemic/bleeding constantly, I think it would be good to try again.
- get in better shape for soccer; work on goalie training.
- therapy. I...find this intimidating, but I think I need to start talking to someone again.
- join the local film society; try to get film work
- screenwriting. More writing in general, but particularly screenwriting. I want to read more screenplays, too, which is both fun and useful,
- Peace Corps? My uncle mentioned this to me recently; I've looked into it before, and it seems like maybe a good idea.
- apartment. Also intimidating. But I really need to not be living with my parents anymore.
- transportation. Also also intimidating, but I should really own a car.
- read more books; watch more films
...I guess that's it. This year felt like it went by pretty fast, or at least uneventfully. 2011 seems to have been The Year of Mediocrity for me. I'm not particularly happy, but life isn't awful. I'm just sort of drifting, is all.
I think I might take a break from the internet for a while, just FYI. We'll see.

Date: 2012-01-15 06:28 pm (UTC)I'd be a little wary of the PC for reasons I can go into more in depth via email if you want. Not that you shouldn't, just that... it's really difficult in a lot of really different ways based on people I've talked to, so you'll want to know what you're potentially getting into before signing up. If you're just looking for an international labor adventure, I'd check out WWOOFing as an alternative. Caroline went to Japan for 6 weeks and really liked her time there, but you can do it for much longer if you want. Plus you get to know where you're going, rather than just roll the dice.

Date: 2012-01-18 03:24 am (UTC)Yeah, I've already looked into a lot of the reservations about the PC, I don't really need a rundown. Yes I know about WWOOFing, but I'm interested in something service-based like the PC instead. I don't know. There are alternatives that are like the PC but do things like a shorter run or choice of destination or whatever, but I don't even know. It's just an idle thought, at the moment.

Date: 2012-01-18 03:39 am (UTC)Idle thoughts are totally underrated as a way of eventually coming up with un-idle plans. It sounds like you're asking the right kinds of questions to figure it all out. It would be sad to not see you for two whole years... but I bet you'd have lots of good stories when you came back. :) Can you imagine though, have two years of TV to catch up on? It'd be like Rip Van Winkle.
