Gah, I'm so sick of being neurotic over posting this. I declare myself done! No more editing! No more following [livejournal.com profile] thespatz around with legal pad full of notes! DONE. FINISHED. POSTING NOW.

...By which I mean to say, hi. I made a vid to MirrorMask, which is a lovely movie done by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean a few years ago (there's a minimally spoilery summary here, if you're interested). As both a film student and a massive perfectionist, I don't think it turned out too badly for a first timer; as a film student and perfectionist, however, I'll be the first to admit it's not perfect. :) I realize that practically no one has seen this movie, but if you would like to watch and maybe give feedback anyway, I'd be much obliged.

Many thanks to my dear patient twin [livejournal.com profile] thespatz, who was encouraging to me but hard on the vid, and told me when I was losing it, back away from the editing program, Lindsey. Which is exactly as a beta should be. Kisses, darling!

Title: Paper Moon
Music: "Paper Moon" by Erin McKeown
Fandom: MirrorMask
Pairing/Rating: as gen as the movie (which means hints of Helena/Valentine)
Summary: "It is only a paper moon / sailing over a cardboard sea / But it wouldn't be make-believe / if you believed in me"
Specs: WMV format, 13.2 MB, 2:08
Watch: download Sendspace | YouSendIt | MediaFire [updated 4/12/12]

(Please let me know if the download links expire; I'm happy to re-upload)

It is only a paper moon
Sailing over a cardboard sea,
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me.

It is only a canvas sky
Sailing over a muslin tree,
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me.

Without your love,
It's a honky-tonk parade.
Without your kiss,
It's a melody played on a penny arcade.

It's a Barnum & Bailey world,
Just as phony as it may be,
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me.

Without your love,
It's a honky-tonk parade.
Without your kiss,
It's a melody played in a penny arcade.

It's a Barnum & Bailey world,
Just as phony as it may be,
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me.

But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me.

But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me.

Thank you so much! This is the first vid I've ever made, so knowing it works even for someone unfamiliar with the source is very reassuring, and a great compliment. :)

It's an interesting film! If you want to see it, I have a copy, and I've been trying to think of an excuse to meet up with you again, anyway. :)

I still love it! All the Valentine bits cause me to smile irrepressibly, and it's shiny and awesome.

And thanks for the thank-you, darlin' - it was my pleasure.

Thanks, babe! All the Valentine bits make me smile, too (well, except for the betrayal part. But you know what I mean). :)

I'm glad it was fun and not a burden, because I'm fully planning to make you do it again! *eg* ("You let a wolf save your life, and then you pay and pay and pay...")

(P.S. Your icon is very appropriate, considering you were my cheerleader in this situation... *rimshot* *runs away*)

That was really very spangly and has increased my love for that film something chronic <3

Hee, I'm glad to hear it! I love the movie a lot (and I'm sure that affection didn't show through at all, /sarcasm :D), and it was really fun to make a vid with. It's so visually interesting, I'm kind of sad there aren't more vids in the fandom. I've only ever seen two others, both of which you can find here, since you seem to be interested. :)

This was totally awesome; thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you liked it! :D I was so lucky to stumble across Erin's version; it really made the vid so much better than if I'd used Ella Fitzgerald or Nat King Cole Trio or whoever. I'm going to have to find more of her music, because I really loved this song.

Ooh, I really liked this. You got the quirky magic of the canon and fit it to the song in a way that mader perfect sense without being boring or predictable.

I really REALLY like this vid. What a neat pairing of song and subject matter--whimsy in the song and the visuals but just enough of the darkness there, too. Really nice work. I'm reccing it for New To You Vidders week over at my journal. :-)

Wow, thank you so much for the rec! This is my first vid ever, so that's really delightfully unexpected. :D And thank you for the kind words. I'm glad that I seem to have hit upon the right balance between whimsical and dark here. I really didn't want to lose that quality from the movie, the way it's not just a dream, but a dream and a nightmare, in a way that stretches beyond her own mind.

This is lovely. :} The whimsical and disturbing aspects of the movie were blended wonderfully. And the song is a fantastic choice. Really really fun to watch. :D

Wow, thank you so much! *blushes* Not to fangirl you too much, but you've made some of my favorite vids (like "Nervous Breakthrough" and "God Is A DJ"), so this comment means a lot to me, especially since this is my first vid ever and therefore entirely unexpected. It's just very gratifying and encouraging. :D

I'm happy I managed to preserve that balance between the darkness and the whimsy, because that's so important to the movie; it's not just a dream, it's a dream and a nightmare (both literally in the dream world and metaphorically for what's going on with her mom in RL). The song was a really lucky find; I was originally planning to settle for the Nat King Cole Trio version, but my twin-and-beta [livejournal.com profile] thespatz forced me to keep looking. Thank goodness for betas, because this song is a million times better for the vid. :)

Wow! I found this vid through a vidukon playlist, and it is glorious. I am always delighted to find new MirrorMask vids and this one's really cool. I love how you've highlighted something of the madness of the movie, and the fact that her mother was such an important part of the vid. I love the song you've used and the way you tie the circus into it too, not just the world of the MirrorMask. The timing is great and I loved the sense of theatricality you've brought to the vid.

What a lovely vid! It seems like the song shouldn't work, but in this vid it does, and it fills me with love for Mirrormask. ♥ I loved your use of the giants; the way they fit with the music and the way you use them to create meaning and story in the vid.
